 Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • Our students put on wonderful performances both Monday and Tuesday this week.  I heard such positive remarks from our families.  Shout out to Carrie for her hard work putting this together and for all of you that supported them before and during the concert.  Our teamwork was on full display this week.  SO AWESOME!
  • Our Jr. Coaches are showing again their leadership skills. They manned a table asking for donations to help them with the cost of their end of the year field trip.  They collected almost $200 and got a very generous donation to pay for the bussing for the event.  Shout out to Teresa for organizing this, finding the volunteers and setting it in motion!
  • I overheard a 5K student say to their teacher today, "I subitized over there!"  He was explaining to her about how he figured out the answer for his question during WIN.  I love the language he used!
  • The hallways and doors are so fun!  It makes the school look so great and I LoVE that our students' work is all over the walls, doors and ceilings.  Thank you for taking on this project and still the learning that is planned for the day!

Nitty-Gritty

  • Santa's coming!!!  I KNOW HIM! (but not as well as a few others at Dodgeland. lol)
    • Santa will be visiting Dodgeland Schools on Friday, December 20th. The plan is for Santa to greet MS/HS students at their doors before school and then head to the elementary classrooms. Similarly to last year, Santa and his assistant will bring a bag of treats to the teacher in the room. The teacher can hand out the treats whenever they feel it's appropriate. If you take any pictures please be sure to share! ðŸ™‚ This year Mrs. Claus will NOT be in attendance due to being run over by a reindeer and needing to get a new knee last week. ðŸ˜‰We will be sure to tell the kids that Mrs. Clause is back making sure all the elves are working hard!
  • Reminders before Break
    • Before you leave for the break, please make sure that you have taken your things out of the fridge that might go bad while we are gone.  Be sure that your Viewsonic board is off, that all lights including any decorative lights that were put up this week and that students have taken home any food items, etc from their lockers that could go bad while we are gone. James and his crew work a few days during the break, but they won't have time for locating and cleaning up spoiled food, etc.  Thank you so much for your help with this!
  • Mid-Year Assessments
    • Starting on January 6, the winter assessment window will open for all grades.  i-Ready and FastBridge can be started for reading and math after that date.  If you have students that need small group setting or other accommodations, please reach out to special education and intervention teachers ahead of time to coordinate times for students to take these tests with them if that is what is needed. Please know that with the added requirements for assessments for Act 20 as well as the Forward testing moving earlier in the year, there will be no retakes for i-Ready and FastBridge.
  • Everyday Speech Survey
    • For teachers in grades 2-5, please watch for an email from Sophie regarding the Everyday Speech program.  Please complete this short survey by Dec 20.  We want to check in to see how it is going and if any of you need any other resources or help with implementation.  Thank you in advance for your feedback!
  • Breakout EDU and Savvas Details
    • Sam has been continuing to work hard on getting our programs onto classlink so that it is easier to use them.  Earlier this week, he sent out an email describing the process to integrate Breakout EDU in your classlink.  Also he shared with me a document that has screenshots to login in to Savvas for the resources for MyView curriculum.  Click HERE to see this document from Savvas directly.
  • Medical Clinic Resources
    • Leah has put together a document that lists of free or reduced price clinics that are nearby our area.  Click HERE to read this document.  If you know of any families that is in need, please use this to share the items on this list.  Thank you Leah for putting this together so that we can help our students and their families.
  • Hallways and Supervision
    • One way to prevent incidents from occurring that involve conflicts between students or horseplay and then take up our time, including instructional minutes, is to be visible and present during any transition times in the hallway.  This includes in the morning before school and after school, before/after recess and lunch, etc. Please be diligent to be in the hallway near your class's lockers to supervise students so that we can intervene if there is any inappropriate student behavior.  Thank you in advance for your supervision.

TechKnow Tip

Cult of Pedagogy is a great website by Jennifer Gonzalez for all things instruction, classroom management, and technology. She has outstanding blogs, podcasts, and videos about the art and science of teaching. I particularly love her article “What to Do on Lame Duck School Days” where she shares 30 alternatives to movie watching on “lame duck days” such as the days before a holiday break. She has the activities broken down into low, medium, and high-prep to help find a good fit for you and your classroom.

Recess Information

Please watch for an email from Teresa to set up a time for her to come in to your classrooms to do a "Recess Reboot" after break. This way we can be sure that students all have a review after being away from school for so many days.  It is important that each classroom sign up for a time.

Now this is MY KIND of decorating!  :-)  (Although I would label it as efficient, not lazy!)

December 6, 2024

 Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • Our Jr. Coaches always impress me.  A few times this week, I got to witness Jr. Coach's being compassionate with students when hurt, but also being great leaders during transition times around recess.  I am proud to say I know these kids!
  • Shout out to Ella for stepping in this week (and the next couple of weeks) to cover the office while I work on getting a new person to join our team! Yes, I miss Trisha, but thankfully she comes to check in every once in awhile (she knows I'm a disaster on my own!) and she is able to guide Ella on the things I don't know how to do!  Also, shout out to Amber for being flexible and making it work in her program without Ella for a little while.
  • There is a student that has had 4 GREAT days in a row this week.  The adults around her praise her continuously, but the best part is how very PROUD of herself that she is.  For those of you that get to work with her often, thank you for not giving up on her, continuously holding her accountable and having high expectations for her, yet putting proactive steps in place to head off common triggers.  Also thank you for helping her to move forward into more positive actions!

Nitty-Gritty

  • Dodgeland's Fab Lab Site
    • Have you checked out the Dodgeland Fab Lab site?  There are projects for sale there and you can also submit an inquiry for a project you'd like to see created.  HERE is the link for their site.  You can explore this site to find the items for sale and for the inquiry link to share your ideas for a project you'd like to see made.  Our students are excited to see their work make others happy!
  • Harvest of the Month - Sweet Potatoes
    • This month Natalie and Kimberly Lafler are highlighting sweet potatoes for December.  Kimberly will be highlighting this in the Harvest Lessons in grades 4-5 on Friday, and in the nutrition lessons for the other grades.
  • PLTW and Classlink
    • Reminder that Sam worked his magic again!  PLTW is ready to go on Classlink.  Please be patient as it loads.  Both students and staff should be using Classlink to login to the PLTW app.
  • Extra Duty Clarification Info
    • As you get the green extra duty sheet for the 2nd half of the school year, there are a couple of reminders that I want to clarify.
      • If there is indoor bus duty in the morning (rain, too cold, etc), the students will be sent directly to classrooms (or breakfast) when the doors open at 7:35.  On the extra duty sheet, you should indicate indoor AM bus duty and the times are 7:35-7:45am because the routine is that students all come in at 7:45 to their lockers/classrooms on normal days.
      • If there is ever a day where you are asked to take another teacher's class (or part of their class) into your classroom for part or all of a day, please be sure to write this on the extra duty sheet.  Laura uses the board policy for substituting for a teacher and adds that amount to the rest of the extra duties.
      • Lunch Duty is a supervisory assignment this school year and is not considered an extra duty.  If you have questions, please let me know and I can show you the calculations that I did this summer regarding prep minutes before putting this in place, etc.
        • Side Note:  Your presence in the lunch room each week is helping tremendously with student behavior and proactively prevents some of the issues that we have had in the past.  Between the alt. lunch option and your presence in the lunch room, this part of the day has far less situations than in the past that takes up your teaching time this year.  Thank you so much for this!
      • Covering Recesses/Lunch periods/Bus Duty for Paras/Teachers:  If you volunteer or are assigned to cover a supervision spot, please write this on the green sheet.
      • Missed Specials:  If we have to cancel a special for your classroom, and you are teaching that special or replacing that period with your own lesson/idea, this is extra duty and should be written on the green sheet as well.
    • Finally, I would highly suggest that you get a new green sheet and leave it somewhere handy so that you can write on it throughout the semester as things come up so that you don't forget anything.  I do my best to remember things, but I know I won't be able to remember all the times each of you take on extra things.  Thank you for your teamwork, I know that it is stressful, so thank you again.
  • Personnel Updates
    • Starting in January, we will have a part-time para working in our special education department.  She is a familiar face as she was here every day last year as a TA!  Maddy Birrenkott will be working every Monday and Friday, while Samantha Keberlein will be working Tues-Thurs with Ms. Vertz/Mrs. Arnes. Please help me welcome Maddy to our staff!
    • Also starting in January is our NEW Elementary Admin. Assistant in the office!  Her name is Patti Rupnow and she is looking forward to joining our team!  She will be in the district next week to meet more of us and to tour the building. (12/12) She will officially start on January 2nd and will work alongside Ella until January 10th. She is ready to take on the busyness of the office and looking forward to getting to know our students and staff.
  • Got Any Lunchroom Forks?
    • Please help Natalie keep track of silverware for the kitchen.  If you borrow something, please return it right away so that money does not get spent unnecessarily for this item. Thank you!
  • Student Email Changes
    • Brad sent out an email to us earlier this week sharing some changes that are in place for student email.  Our elementary students can only send emails to teachers and staff at Dodgeland, no students. This also means that they can not send emails to any non-Dodgeland emails as well.
  • Milwaukee Art Museum - Did you see this??
    • Mrs. Buss shared a link to a news clip that shared that starting immediately due to an anonymous donor, children (under age 12) will be admitted to the art museum for FREE! This includes access to all exhibits, collections and programs at the museum.  Just passing this on for your knowledge and in case this is something you want to share with your families and friends.  Click HERE to watch the news clip.
  • Comfy Countdown starts on Monday!
    • Every year, Jessica adds some festivities for all of us during the weeks leading up to the holiday and winter break.  Her email outlines the details for the activities, including information on the Holiday Photo Booth and how to be eligible for the extra personal day drawing.   Enjoy the next couple of weeks!

TechKnow Tip

Ho ho ho! It's that time of the year again when we all get excited about the new gadgets and gizmos that Santa might bring us. But what about the old ones that we no longer need or want? Do we just toss them in the trash and forget about them? No way! That would be a waste of resources and a threat to the environment. Instead, we should e-recycle them! E-recycling is the process of safely disposing of electronic waste and recovering valuable materials that can be reused or recycled. E-recycling is not only good for the environment, but also for your wallet and your community.

How do you e-recycle in Wisconsin? Well, it's easy and convenient. Wisconsin has a statewide e-waste recycling program called E-Cycle Wisconsin. E-Cycle Wisconsin collects fees from electronics manufacturers and uses them to reimburse registered collectors and recyclers who accept eligible devices from households and schools. Eligible devices include TVs, computers, monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, fax machines, DVD players, VCRs, DVRs, and cell phones. You can find a list of registered collectors and recyclers near you on the E-Cycle Wisconsin website or by calling 1-800-RECYCLE. Take a look at this helpful Infographic for more information!

So don't let your old gadgets gather dust in your closet or end up in the landfill. E-recycle them today and make a difference for tomorrow!

Behavior Specialist Information

Building Security
Recently when I have been setting up recess, I noticed that there have been small rocks in the door by 4th/5th grade that has been preventing the door from closing fully (however, at a glance it looks closed). When you come in from bus duty in the morning, please just confirm that the doors have fully closed and latched.

Bucket Filling - a small update/modification/clarification
Please continue to use Poms to reinforce bucket filling behaviors for our 5k-3rd grade students. Please continue to use tickets (orange) to reinforce bucket filling behaviors for our 4th-5th grade students. 4th/5th grade students should write their name on their ticket and put them in their classroom bucket (the tickets are in lieu of poms). Monthly a winner will be announced for the most bucket filling 5k-3 and 4th-5th, and additionally 4th-5th graders will have a chance to win an individual prize quarterly for bucket filling behaviors.

PD Spotlight

This time of year can be challenging for all of us.  Some kids are very excited about the holidays.  Some kids are very anxious about the holidays and the extra stress that comes with it.  Some truly dread the long winter break and the break from routine that it brings.  So this week's PD spotlight is a reminder and a strategy that I saw on the Teach Daily Tip of the Week.

Friday Funny

When Matt was alive, he LOVED the Chuck Norris jokes.  He even had a T-shirt about Chuck Norris winning in a staring contest with the sun.  They were always so dumb they were funny, but as soon as I saw this meme, I thought now this is one that Matt would have loved!  Does this make you laugh too?

Nitty-Gritty

  • December, Here we COME!
    • As you are planning for your December classroom, please remember to start your day with reminders of the expectations and reteach as necessary.  When students are off of school for even a couple of days, it is easy for them to slip out of their routines and habits that they follow during the school weeks.  By spending a few minutes at the beginning of the day/lesson, it will pay dividends with your instructional minutes throughout the week!
  • Transition Plans
    • While I am working on getting a new Elementary Administrative Assistant, Ella will be covering the office (because she has been covering the office daily for Trisha's lunch period for the past 1.5 years and knows how to do the attendance, phones, assessing fees, etc) and hopefully a sub will be found for her position in EC/4K.  The goal is to have someone in place by Dec 9 or Dec 16.
  • Time is FLYING BY!
    • It is going to feel like time is flying! Please remember that we have only 3 short weeks before our next break.  Then we will have only 2.5 months before it will be time for the state testing already.  Every minute that we get to have with our students is precious.  Help your students understand the how important it is to be at school each day and ready to learn.

Tuesday Funny

(It doesn't have the same ring though does it???  BUT, I'm pretty excited to have the house to myself tonight and so that makes it a GREAT DAY!!)

November 22, 2024

 Happy Thanksgiving!

This holiday season I am especially grateful for all of the wonderful people that I get to work with each and every day.  This past year or so has been difficult health-wise and I am finally starting to feel better, to which I am beyond thankful.  However, I want to use this week's blog to make sure that you know how much I care about all of you and how truly grateful I am to work alongside you as part of the Dodgeland community.  I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and you have time to relax and enjoy the people that mean the most to you.

Thank you for...

Alexis - using your skills to work with our 5K students to practice their foundational reading skills and for providing fun after school opportunities for our older kids in the den.

Amber - planning ahead for our students, both on your caseload and in the older grades.  Your commitment to teamwork is much appreciated. I also appreciate the conversations I get to have with you.  You make me smile and laugh frequently which is good for my soul too!

Andrea - taking on the challenge of moving to the Elementary with positivity and hard work.  I am so grateful to get to work with you more closely this year. We are very fortunate to have you working with our students!

Andrea, Mary R, Mary S, Jazmin, Heather, Sunnessa, Kay - tirelessly providing breakfast/lunch/snack to all of our students, delivering milk to our classrooms and greeting our students with a smile every day!

Ashley G - jumping into our system with organization, kindness, and teamwork. I love problem solving with you about situations that come up. I'm so glad you chose to join our team at Dodgeland!

Ashley H - joining Reading Corps and working so hard with our early readers. Your commitment to them will have a lasting effect on their school career!

Ashley N - finding and sharing resources for our families so that our students can be wrapped around with wide variety of services that help them to thrive. I also appreciate your problem-solving conversations with our team as well. :-)

Bethany D - making me and your colleagues laugh, even if I am the victim of your ideas! I also appreciate how you advocate for your students and their needs, as well as provide the consistent love these little ones need!

Bethany N - continuing in the Reading Corps program at Dodgeland. Your expertise and knowledge of the program is beyond helpful to our students!

Bethany T. - taking on our 3K program and making it the success that it is.  Our community is very lucky to have this option to them and we are lucky that we get your teacher expertise in our 5K and 1st grade classrooms every afternoon as well!

Blasia - being a valued and wonderful member of the Dodgeland community.  You work hard each and every day in every role you have here and we are beyond lucky to have you here!

Brad - working tirelessly across so many different parts of our building.  From the sound system, to network servers, to iPads, to PowerSchool and beyond.  I rely on you so much for so many things and love to collaborate on things with you.  You always put the needs of the district at the forefront.  Thank you!

Brenda - your caring ways with all of our students and your colleagues. You are always the first person to offer a kind word, a compassionate ear or a helping hand.  Thank you!

Brent - being the guest teacher we get to see the most and especially for stepping in all over the building to help out all of us.  We are so glad that you choose to be at Dodgeland almost every day!

Brittany - being a dependable and kind role model for our 4K students.  The way you listen to their stories makes them feel important.  Thank you for this!

Broedy - your steadfast work in our building and stepping in to help us with a variety of things.  We appreciate your quiet ways!

Carol - always coming in with a smile.  You make me smile in the short interactions I get to have with you each week.  Your kindness just exudes from you in all that you do.  Thank you!

Carrie - taking on this new teaching position and working hard to make it your own, adding fun to your class periods and being innovative too.  I am glad you are here!

Chris - being a dependable person for many of our students that need to come to school early each morning.  Having someone greet students with a smile and a kind greeting is a great way to start their day!  Also, thank you for all the ways that you continue to help our 3K students grow and thrive in our school.

Chrissy - supporting our students and being a resource for us and our students when we need advice or ideas to help our students, whether it is with sensory needs, handwriting improvement or fine motor skills.  It is wonderful to know that we have someone with your expertise and that is approachable to ask for ideas as well.

Christina - the many ways that you support our school.  You help answer questions, you find the answer if you don't know and your calm responses to our questions always seems to help lower our stress.  I don't know what I would do without you and knowing that you are always willing to be a thinking partner with me, makes me happy.  Thank you so much!

Courtney - including literacy into your art class. Our kids benefit from the integration of reading into art that you have mastered for years. Thank you for this connection!

Dom - sharing the just right gif to match every situation.  They always make me smile and it's a true skill to find and use the one that fits perfectly. Every. Single. Time.  :-)

Ella - being consistent with our students to help them grow.  Also I appreciate that you continue to think about ways to add to the Dodgeland Den program including new toys, fun activities and consistent schedules and are never afraid to take feedback from your coworkers.  Thank you so much!

Eneida - joining us full-time this school year and jumping right back in to the program like you have been here for YEARS!  I enjoy working with you and watching your loving ways with all of our 4K students.

Gabrielle - all the ways that you help your students thrive.  You make your students in your class and from all of your previous classes feel important and many of them want to re-enter your classroom as High School and college students as well.  Thank you for all you do to provide this lasting memory for our students.

Hailey - celebrating our students' successes.  You can see even the smallest of wins and make sure that students can feel that success as well!  I love that you care so deeply about our system and you are always advocating for our students.  They are lucky to have you in their corner!

Jahra - never, ever giving up.  Students that walk in your classroom feel loved, included and proud of the work that they do with you.  Your persistence with helping your students grow, not only as students but also as people with character is always noticed and appreciated.  Thank you!

James - making me laugh each week and for the many things that you do around the building that support our students, staff and especially me.  I'm certain that you do not hear my appreciation enough!

Jen - your color coding, google sheet/excel documents that keep information organized and in one place for me and our teams.  I appreciate them more than you know because I like to use them, but I rarely have time (and let's face it, skill) to put something like it together myself!

Jerry - working hard at Dodgeland every day.  Our building is a big place full of things to do, maintain or fix.  I appreciate that you always help me when I ask and never make me feel bad for my questions.

Jessica B - Thank you for willingness to step in to help out where needed and in classrooms and grades that are new to you this year. You ask good questions, you give me feedback and helpful ideas periodically to make our system better and more efficient.  I appreciate this level of collegiality and teamwork!

Jessica J - your tolerance with my annoying habit of waiting until the last minute to complete things, and the numerous weird things that always end up in my office that I'm sure drives you crazy. I also appreciate that when I ask for your time, you make time for me to ask questions and bounce ideas off of you.  Thank you!

Kari G - the many, many, many times that you answer a radio call to help a staff member or a student with something throughout the day.  If you don't hear it enough, I am beyond appreciative of your hard work for all of us and know that I need to make sure I say it more often. Thank you so much!

Kari W - choosing Dodgeland to start your teaching career.  I love watching your students grow under your guidance and encouragement.  You have taken on all the parts of a new job with confidence, competence, and collegiality.  We are all glad you are on our team!

Karissa - stepping into the 4K classroom teacher role even though it meant a lot more responsibilities for you.  You are taking on this new role with enthusiasm, kindness and organization.  Thank you for everything!

Kathy - your calm way (even if you don't feel calm) when addressing your students.  Every time I see you, you have something to smile or laugh about, which is contagious.  You don't give up on your students and are constantly looking for ways to help all of our students to grow and have the plan that will help them to thrive.  I appreciate all you do Kathy!

Kerri - your loving and consistent ways with our students.  Your smile and kindness shines bright wherever you go and it always makes me smile too!

Kimi - all that you do for so many of us in the district.  I know that I ask questions that I have asked before and you are always so nice to me when I am sure you are feeling annoyed. I will work on it, I promise!

Klair - for joining our Dodgeland team this year.  You work hard to create a classroom environment that is respectful and focused on working hard and celebrating their successes.  You are working on transitioning so that they get ready to do this in the 3 min. window they will have in Middle School.  We are so fortunate that you chose us!  I am glad that you are on our team!

Lance - preparing our grounds for us and the numerous activities that occur here, including building the shed for our playground equipment, getting the curtains up in room 108, and even for your yummy homemade treats!

Laura - reminding me of routines and procedures that I really should have down pat by now. Thank you for your kind and caring ways with all staff but especially for me.  I always feel like when you ask how things are going, you really want to know.  I do appreciate being able to work with you and that you make me feel comfortable to ask for help.

Leah - caring about our students and staff's health so much.  You are always trying to come up with ways to help all of us feel better and communicating with staff and parents frequently.  Thank you so much!

Lexi - looking and finding the strengths and positive parts of all the students you work with.  I know that some days are harder to remember those, but you always let students start fresh the next day without holding it against them.  The connections you make with our students will stay with them for years and years!

Lindsey - your consistency and organization for your students. Your students know exactly what is expected and you work hard to provide a safe and peaceful learning environment for them to be in each day.  I know this has been a difficult fall and I hope you know how much your Dodgeland team wants to support you here because we care about you, not just Mrs. Klink.  (of course that also includes Korbin and Teagan!)

Lynn - the communication and for answering all of my enrollment questions.  You have a way of describing complex things in a way that I can understand!  You will be missed at Dodgeland, but I am very happy for you.  Thank you for everything!

Mandy - your creative and fun activities and experiences that you provide for our 5K students every year.  These are activities that stay with your students for years and also what our families remember when they think back to these important years of their child's life. I know this takes a lot of your time, but please know that it does not go unnoticed!

Marcia - your teamwork and collegiality.  25 years ago, I started at Dodgeland and got to meet you and work with you as your mentee.  How lucky I am that I got to grow as a professional alongside you all these years!  Thank you!

Mary Jo - taking on 1st grade with the same fantastic teaching talent you used in 5th grade.  At every position you have had at Dodgeland, you have been masterful in that role.  We are beyond lucky that you are part of our team!

Melissa C-A - the many times that you make me laugh.  Aaaaand, sometimes the jokes others besides myself will understand! I'm still not going to use your suggested Friday Funny though.  Staff will have to ask you about that themselves! :-) I also appreciate all the hard work you are putting in for our students this school year.  I know that it might seem daunting and overwhelming at times, but you got this and we are all here to help!

Melissa U - joining us at the elementary this year and working so hard to get to know a new system and a brand new age group with new routines.  Thank you so much for taking this on with such positivity!

Michael - taking on soccer and football at recess so our students can enjoy it at recess, but also to prevent the inevitable arguments that we all know are coming.  I am certain it is not easy, but please know how truly grateful I am that you and your expertise in this area are there every day!

Natalie - all the new things you have taken on this year in the effort to make the system more efficient including the new milk and lunch counts on PowerSchool, the Dodgeland Den snack updated procedures and taking on the Harvest of the month activities.  I loved hearing kids this month tell me about the "new" juice at breakfast!  Cranberries were a hit across the building!

Nicole - the work you put in to the many things around the building beyond the therapies that you provide for our students. I also appreciate being in meetings with very young students that are being evaluated and you have a way of explaining such complex things in a way that everyone understands.  You make families feel at ease and encouraged with your thought out plans for their child.  Thank you so much!

Noah - providing our 5th graders their first experience with learning to play an instrument. You are so patient and clear when teaching that the frustration that occurs naturally is alleviated so much!  Thank you for being a welcome entry to the Band world!

Rachael - moving to the math and PLTW world in 5th grade.  The time and effort you put in to make this shift is evident and is helping our students to learn at high levels. You are even taking on a student teacher next semester to provide guidance to the new staff to this career!

Reilly - seeing our students as the people they are and focusing on their positive traits.  It is easy to see that you care about the students you work with and want the best things possible for them.  Thank you for making that a priority in your day!

Rose - advocating for resources for our multi-lingual learners and providing caring support for our parents as well. Students enjoy working with you as do your colleagues. Thank you for all that you do!

Roxanne - all the hard work that you put in day in and day out to provide us all with a clean environment.  Your attention to detail is definitely noticed by us.  Thank you so much!

Sam - answering the phone when I call (even if you don't want to!) and always be willing to help me with my ridiculous questions!

Samantha - joining our team full-time this year.  Your expertise is valued and our students are very lucky to have your consistent and loving ways.  Our students have made a strong connection to you in such a short time.  Thank you for all that you do!

Sandi - providing feedback to me to make our procedures better and also for continuously trying new strategies to see if it will help solve a problem for one of our students.  I appreciate that you are always willing to go where help is needed and that you want what is best for our students and our school.  I am so glad you are a part of our Dodgeland Team.

Sarah P - the many ways that you support students at Dodgeland.  I don't get to see you as often as I once did, but when I do, I know I can count on you to be ready with a kind word that makes me smile.  Thank you Sarah for this.  It means more than you know.

Shanalyn - all the hard work you put in to set up systems for your own groups and also for the paras that work with you.  You provide a fun learning environment, yet also have expectations for your students at all times.  Your students know they can rely on you to help them and listen.  I am so glad that you have chosen Dodgeland to be your school!

Sophie - taking on the Check-in, Check-out program for some of our students that need it most.  You provide a very important piece to their days, but also for their teacher and classmates as well.  The relationships you build with students will help them to thrive.  Thank you!

Stacey - advocating for your students for the needs that they have.  I also appreciate that you provide an atmosphere of joy in your classroom while they are learning.  You can laugh with your students and you make them feel cared about and important.  Thank you so much for that!

Stephanie - providing our 4K students with a truly play based education.  I appreciate the extra little things that occur throughout the school year to provide them with fun experiences.  This could be following clues to find Pete the Cat or "digging" for dinosaur bones, etc.  This is almost as fun for me to watch as it is for the kids to do!  I know it is a lot of work, but I really appreciate that you do them for our students.

Sue R - for being you.  You might be one of the people I have worked with the longest here at Dodgeland!  I remember sharing a classroom with you way back in Reeseville in the Middle School.  You are always so kind to people and way back then I am certain you had many times that you wish I would just. stop. talking!  But, thank you for being such a great listener to staff and students alike.

Sue O - so very many things.  You are so amazing and I am grateful that you are always thinking about our students and staff and how to support them all.  Whether it is PLTW materials/modules, grants to apply for, math intervention, and everything in between.  I am grateful for you each and every day.

Taylor - making lasting connections with our students (even long after they leave your classroom) and working at providing the instruction they need.  This might be with the language they need, the SEL strategies they need, or even just the space they need to work through a difficult situation.  Thank you for this.

Teresa - continuing in the Behavioral Specialist role after last year.  I love collaborating with you, I appreciate that you provide me with feedback and that you are always willing to brainstorm when difficult situations come up.  Your hard work is always noticed and appreciated here.

Tina - joining our team and being so flexible with the unique way we are handing specials for your 4K class this year.  I appreciate that you know your students well and you try many things to help them to be successful in your classroom. We are glad you are here!

Trisha C - always sharing your feedback, thoughts and questions with me to continue to make Dodgeland a great place to work and a great place for our students to be.  I value your insights more than you know!

Trisha P - keeping track of so many things for me and problem solving with me about things that come up.  I will miss you when you move to the other side of the building, but am very happy for you!

Vicky - working day in and day out at providing consistent expectations, kindness and high levels of support in their classroom.  Every child that is lucky enough to interact with you benefits as do the rest of us that get to work alongside you each day.

Watson - always seeming to know when I need some puppy love.  Getting to love on you helps ease my stress, and I love how excited our students are to see you each day!

May your Thanksgiving be relaxing and full of the things that bring you joy!

Stay Safe and Be Well,

Jenny

For certified staff, I will see you on Monday morning!  Don't forget the admin team is serving lunch and the PD schedule is HERE.

 Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • 5th graders wrote an introduction paragraph for the essay they are working on.  Their teacher broke the process down into manageable steps, modeled it for them, and then gave specific details that allowed them to write their own. They were doing a really great job of coming up with a hook, details and a thesis statement.
  • Shout to Taylor who I got to watch teach a literacy lesson in both English and Spanish.  Her students were all engaged and waited patiently if she needed to give feedback to others regardless of the language she was using.
  • A few times this week, some of our students that struggle to stay regulated got frustrated and/or angry, and they had trusted adults that could coach them through it.  In these incidents, the students were able to re-regulate in a shorter amount of time and with little to no aggression.  I know it seems like a long process but these are huge wins!  Working together is what helps these students continue to make gains!

Nitty-Gritty

  • Vision Screening
    • On Tuesday, the Lions Club are volunteering their time to provide vision screening for our students.  It will take place in the same room as last year, room 137, the new EL PLTW room.  They will set up one of the doors as the entrance and the other as the exit.  Please click HERE to sign up your class for a 15 min. time slot. (All classes 3K-5th grade should attend this screening.)
  • Copier/Printer Reminders:
    • If you have a HS TA in your classroom, please remind them that if they are making copies or printing anything for you, they need to come to the elementary office to use the machine with a printer fob checked out from the IMC.  Also, if you are copying large jobs, please use the office or staff lounge machines so that the smaller one in the gathering area can be used for quick jobs for staff.  Thank you!
  • Preparing for the PD days
    • As I shared at the staff meeting, on Tuesday, 11/26, we will have a guest presenter from Apple.  To prepare for this PD session, please make sure to have your iPad updated and fully charged.  It is important for you to do this ahead of time so that you can get the most of the session and learning that is presented.
  • PD Agenda for 11/25-11/26
    • Our PD Agenda for the days before Thanksgiving is HERE. There are times in the schedule that are devoted for you and your own work time or to meet as grade level teams.  Also, this would be a good time to add in November's Citizenship grades, make sure that your EP documents are complete, work on the Act 20 lessons for December, or finish any other things that have been on your to-do list for awhile.  If you need to see me, please sign up for a time using my calendly link HERE.
  • Citizenship Grades
    • Please plan to add November Citizenship grades in the gradebook before Thanksgiving break.  This monthly grade will give you data at the end of the semester to determine the grade for the report card.
  • Emergency Sub Plans
    • Do you need to make any changes to your sub plans that are in your substitute folder on the Substitute Teacher Plans shared Drive?  Is your class list accurate since you originally uploaded/created the document(s)?  Please make sure you have plans for an emergency that can help a guest teacher, but especially for those of us that are stepping in from the elementary. Please look through these in next week just to double check.

TechKnow Tip

Reliable research is a crucial skill for our students to learn. World Book Online is a perfect place for students to start their initial reliable research. World Book, which can be accessed via ClassLink by staff and students, is broken down into grade-band appropriate learning pages. Each page includes information, pictures, videos, and audio clips to give students an overall understanding of a topic. There is also a great timelines feature which shows created timelines and even a way for you to create your own.

Recess Information

Cold Weather Gear

Please remind students to bring their cold weather gear so they are comfortable at recess. If students are in need of

clothing (meaning they don’t have the means to purchase any, there are some resources in the purple purpose room).

We will not have extra coats, snow pants, boots, etc in the office for kids to borrow. If they did not bring their

gear/are choosing not to wear their gear, they will just be cold.

Behavior Specialist Information

Recess Detentions

Instead of the detention binder, there are now three folders, one for each grade level/lunch period located in the

office mailboxes. On your duty day, please check the folder to see if there are any referrals (left side of the folder).

If so, that means kids have detention, if there are only the detention resources (left side of the folder is empty),

there are no detentions that day.

PD Spotlight

This speaks to me.  Honestly, I think all people are like this sometimes.  Even my adult children, my parents, everyone... If this is you, please know I am here to listen and support you with anything!

 Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • 5K students blending words with digraphs, blends and an r-controlled vowel.  It is very cool watching them sound out words and applying in a short book!
  • Our Rise students are working hard on short vowels in a variety of ways including applying to books.  I love listening to them read, learn and enjoy it at the same time!
  • There have a been a number of conversations in the past week that I got to be a part of or hear about, that were full of collaboration to determine procedures/plans for students that are struggling with the most empathetic and caring professionals I've ever met!  Thank you all for being you!
  • There are so many staff members pitching in to help out with duties, covering classes and supporting one another throughout the weeks.  I'm grateful for all of you that are helping out.  Thank you so much!

Nitty-Gritty

  • Veteran's Assembly
    • Monday, 11/11/24, is our annual Veteran's assembly in the HS gym.  It will start promptly at 9:30.  Please start arriving to the gym around 9:25 as the veterans like to welcome our students to the assembly in the commons.  It is Red/White/Blue day, but please dress professionally as we will have many guests in the building on Monday.  Recess will change for the day as well.
      • Grades 3-5 will have recess from 8:45-9am (Supervisors: Lexi, Juech, Bingen, Fortmann)
      • Grades 5K-2 will have recess from 9-9:15am (Supervisors: Mosher, Schweitzer, Reilly, Riege)
      • Grade 4K - Same time as normal, 9-9:15am, unless you need more time for snack to get ready for the assembly, you can go earlier.
  • Looking Ahead - Underground Spirit Week
    • Our wellness committee organized a staff only spirit week.  This is just for staff and we are not sharing it with students.  Let's see if they notice!  Below is the flyer that they created.  Enjoy!

  • PD Days for certified staff on 11/25-11/26
    • Looking ahead to our professional development days...  The agenda for these two days will be out soon.  We have a number of things planned for the two days, we just have a couple of finishing touches to the agenda.  It will be out soon.  We will participating in grade level data meetings, work time for the next Act 20 lessons, a session with an Apple representative/trainer and time for collaboration and planning.
  • Milk Tally Sheets
    • Please make sure to take attendance, including lunch and milk count by 8:30 each day.  This gives the Food service dept enough time to get the coolers ready for the whole school.  Also, please make sure to fill out the tally sheets for milk for snack break each day.  It is important for the reporting that Natalie does at the end of the year.  In addition, if a child comes in late, please add to PowerSchool.  (Students can still go down to get a milk if they come in late.)
  • 2025 Conservation Poster Contest
    • The Dodge County Land and Water Conservation Department contacted me about a poster contest coming up.  The entries are due by Jan. 6th and the theme of the contest this year is "Home is where the Habitat is."  Click HERE for the letter with more information and HERE for the contest details/registration form.  This is optional, but I share in case your class or some of your students want to participate in it.
  • ChatGPT Idea for Literacy
    • Mrs. Johnson shared this article with me and I thought it was a great way to use AI for your students.  The article is about using ChatGPT to create a Reader's Theater script to use in your classrooms.  Reader's Theater is a great way to work on reading fluency, but sometimes finding the scripts is the hardest part.  Click HERE to read this article.
  • NED's Mindset Mission Assembly
    • I heard from a number of staff members that were interested in bringing the assembly to Dodgeland.  Mark your calendars: Friday, November 22 from 2:10-2:55pm.  The cost for this assembly comes from the sale of Yo-yos, which I know comes with a host of other things to deal with.  However, my thought is that they will be sale only after school that day.  (We can collect for any student that wants to purchase that day and hand them to teachers to hand out at 3pm when they all go home!  By the time they return to school, the yo-yos will be a thing of the past.  :-)

Behavior Specialist Information

Bucket Filler Information

Thank you for your continued support in positively reinforcing our students! To clarify a couple things:

  • 4k is doing their own classroom incentive.
  • 5k-3rd - please continue to use the poms to reward bucket filler behaviors (acts of kindness, being helpful, being responsible, etc)
  • 4th - 5th - please continue (or start - lol) to use the orange tickets to enforce bucket filler behaviors. Students that receive an orange ticket should put their name on their ticket and the ticket in their class bucket. These count in the whole school program in lieu of the poms, but we will also pull names for individual incentives at 4th/5th.
  • Green tickets are on hold. Those are for additional incentives as a boost. The next one will likely be in January.

Recess Information

Worth a Repeat!

Huge thanks to Lance for getting our recess shed built. Starting next week this is where our recess equipment

will be kept. There is a lock on it, however, all ES staff members' keys should work to open it.

It would be very helpful if the staff members on bus duty in the morning could open the shed at 7:45 when they

blow the whistle so the Junior Coaches could set up the equipment while the students are transitioning in.

When the whistle blows for the 12:30 recess,  the JC clean-up crew should put the equipment away back in the

shed and lock the shed door. Thanks in advance for helping me get this system going.

Please continue to hold our students accountable for taking care of our equipment, playing core games, and

using kind language. We are starting to see equipment being misused and more and more “imaginary” games

being the cause of conflict between students at recess.

TechKnow Tip

Padlet is a virtual pinboard that allows users to post comments, questions, and resources in one place. This virtual pinboard allows for mind mapping, collaborative group projects, discussions, photo gallery, and an interactive repository for resources to share with students. Here are 20 Ways for Students to Use Padlet in the Classroom. To get started, you can sign in to Padlet here with your Google account.

PD Spotlight

This week's letter is K for Kindness.  We are all kind people and especially with students. The hardest part of this is remembering that our stress comes out in our tone, words and actions that are sending a possible message that does not match how kind we truly are.  Plus our students need us even when they are searching for our love and kindness in a not-so-great way.  Kindness to those around us makes us all feel cared for, valued and contributes to a positive work environment.

Friday Funny

Last weekend, we celebrated my parents' 50th wedding anniversary.  Part of this celebration was to look back in the past and share old photos. Mason took one look at one of our family pictures and just had to add his own caption.  It made us all laugh so much.  Hope you enjoy it too!

The aftermath of a group LASIK Surgery outing!
