December 20

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • So many wonderful memories made this week at school...Thank you to all of you for providing a structured learning environment, yet still taking a few short moments of time to provide experiences for them that they will remember for a long time!
  • 4K students excitedly telling me that they are looking for the Gingerbread Man!  (When I asked a student today about whether they ever found the gingerbread man, she said, "He's gone. We ate him!")  This age group is teaching me SO much this year! :-)
  • Impressive 3rd grade writing pieces about a informational topic of their choice.  I read about Nerf guns, fishing, comic books, candy corn, Dodgeland, Roboblox, dance, etc.  There were great leads in them, and so many text features including pictures with captions, a Venn diagram, charts and glossaries.  So great to read and hear about their excitement in pride in their work!
  • 4th graders practicing how to start a conversation with others.  They learned they can ask questions, notice and comment on something, compliment others, use their knowledge of the other person.

What's Happening at Dodgeland?

  • Winter break!  I sincerely hope you have a relaxing, peaceful and safe break.  Please take care of yourself and spend time with those that make you happy!

Nitty-Gritty

  • iPad Updates: Please update your iPads to the latest software version before heading off to break.  The latest iOS version is 13.3 as of today.  Please check your software today.
  • Class DoJo: In a continued effort to communicate and share the awesome learning and activities that happen in our building, please share your class DoJo pages with Christina Abegglen from the IMC.  This will give her another way to communicate with families.
  • FaceBook Features - This is the other way we can get information out to our community about the students' experiences and learning in our building.  In January, I will begin the Staff Member Feature for the week.  I will be coming around to get information from you. (This is my heads up!) . Thank you to those that have already sent me the information for this upcoming post feature.
  • Literacy - I have read all SLO and PPG forms that have been submitted by Elementary Staff.  The majority of you are working on individual or team SLO goals related to reading.  In an effort to support this work, I will be sharing information through the weekly blogs, in person, through feedback and tapping into staff member's expertise to share at Staff meetings.  The goal of this communication is to help us all elevate students' reading achievement, learn and grow in our own teaching craft, and ways to reflect on our classroom and student progress.
  • i-Ready - Looking ahead: The winter i-Ready testing window is from January 7 through February 1.

PD Spotlight

This week's PD spotlight is more about a topic that is timely for me right now.  Click here to read the article on the importance of sleep.  Sadly, the part I am looking forward to during break is getting more sleep.  However, I have to figure this out for every week, not just trying to catch up.  It is a myth anyway.  You never actually "catch up" on sleep,  This article just made me think.  I share it with you as so many of us have had an exhausting week.  Take Care everyone!

Friday Funny

This week it is a short video clip.  I saw this online on Monday, and Ella and I enjoyed it so much I felt I had to share!  (It is a 3 year old video, but I had never seen it before.  Be sure to watch all the way to the end.)

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • 5th graders celebrating their writing pieces in front of parents and other guests.  What great figurative language I read in so many pieces!
  • Students singing their hearts out at the winter concert.  A huge shout-out to Ms. Hudson and Mr. Muenchow for their hard work to make the concert a success.
  • 3rd graders writing informational text features in their writing.  How cool is that?!
  • Staff members stepping in to help out colleagues when emergencies arise or students are struggling to regulate. This makes us all feel supported and encouraged.  Thank you!

Nitty Gritty

  • Food Service Survey - As you finish the paper surveys for grades 4K-3, please place them in my mailbox.  Grades 4-5, I will send you and your students a link on Friday. Please plan a time for students to take the survey before next week Friday.
  • Break is coming up - For some of our students, they do not look forward to winter break.  The uncertainty of their days, the stress of the holidays on family, and other adverse childhood experiences cause students to have more difficulty with regulation skills and focusing just before breaks start.  The best way to help our students is to continue to be the compassionate, kind and consistent educators we are every day.  The more we deviate from our normal schedule the harder it is for students already struggling to have successful days.
  • Target Based Grading - Please watch for an email and/or video with some follow up information from concerns and questions brought up on Wed. night.

Please check out the part of an article about how to find renewal during Winter Break. My greatest wish is that you all have a peaceful relaxing break doing the things that allow you to renew and come back in January ready to take on this exhilarating, but complex profession. The article is by a man named John Spencer, a former MS teacher, now college professor. He writes a blog (among other things) and emphasizes how to help students and teachers tap in to their creativity.  Please click here to read this VERY short piece about strategies to find renewal during winter break.

Friday Funny

I was reading some meme's about dad jokes and came across the one below. This made me laugh out loud for two reasons.

1. Born in a car, so his name is Carson!  That's funny!

and

2. It reminded me of my late husband.  When Mason was born, Matt started telling people that we named him Mason because he was born in May and he's our son, so he's our Ma-son!  Then he laughed and laughed.  I groaned, and it became a running joke in our household ever since!

Nitty-Gritty

  • FaceBook reminder - Please let me know if I can feature you for a FaceBook weekly post.  The more we can connect with our community, the more they will hear the positive things we do each and every day here.
  • Playworks Update - Coach Jena emailed out a follow up after her last visit to our classrooms.  This is her final visit to classrooms, but she will be here a couple more times this year during our recesses though.  I encourage you to continue to use the Playworks games, activities and attention getters to develop/practice SEL skills and build community in the classroom. The few minutes that these activities take will pay off in upcoming lessons when students are ready to learn and focused.
  • Food Service survey - The school board has asked that students be surveyed about breakfast and lunch.  Please watch your email next week for the link and/or procedure for giving the survey to our elementary students.
  • Summer School - Yep, you read that correctly!  I'm going to begin planning for next year's summer school session.  The dates are: June 15-July 23 (Mon-Thurs from 7:30-noon).  Watch for an email in January with more information!

I am sharing a short article this week about managing teacher stress.  I truly believe teaching is a calling and one of the best careers in the country.  It comes with the opportunity to make a difference each and every day.  It also means that we make hundreds of decisions day after day.  We get to work with lots of different people that have a variety of perspectives.  The work is exciting but also can cause stress.  How we handle the stress is the key to taking care of our own well-being and enjoying this career.  I came across this article and thought about how I needed it after today in particular.  I want to draw your attention to numbers 8 and 9 specifically. (All of the tips are good, but I want to emphasize these.)  As a part of the elementary team, I want us all to find it easy to use these two tips here at Dodgeland.  Let me know if you need me!

Thanksgiving Week Quick Blog Update

This two-day week is a whirlwind!  Thanks for keeping the focus on learning.  When we return it will be a fast 3 weeks before our winter break.  When we keep our focus on the routines/procedures and the learning we get to do, our students' behavior and/or anxiety stays in check.  The more we disrupt their routine, the more struggles our students seem to have.  Thank you in advance for helping them to stay regulated during this time of year.  For some students, this time of year is more difficult and stressful.  Continuing to be the consistent, caring people and places in their lives will help them tremendously!

Nitty-Gritty

  • Sharing with our Community - FaceBook and beyond
    • FaceBook is a wonderful social media tool that reaches a large portion of our community.  It is a way to showcase our celebrations and get important information out to stakeholders in our community.  However, it can also be a place where others can spread negativity or complaining.  DES has a lot of things to celebrate.  The education and experiences that our students get while in our care are important to share with everyone.  Let's fill our school's FaceBook page with the awesome learning that is happening here each and every day.  Many of you already do this on your DoJo site or your class FaceBook sites.
      • If you have pictures from your classes, please share them with me and a sentence or two to describe the learning.  I will place it on the DES FaceBook page.  If you have a classroom page, allow the DES page to Share it on theirs.  This can be any learning; experiments, collaboration, reading, problem-solving, etc.
        • The goal is to have something to share each and every day.  Our students are constantly learning!  Let's make sure everyone knows about it!!
    • In addition, another way to connect with the community is with a Staff member of the week.  This means we would highlight one staff member each Friday on Facebook.  Here's our chance to connect with our community and share why we work at Dodgeland.  Please share with me:
      • Your hometown/where you graduated from
      • Your Career experience (this could be years taught, previous positions/schools, etc.)
      • Family, hobbies, fun Facts that you are comfortable sharing
      • Why you love Dodgeland
      • Pictures of you, your classroom, your family...again what you are comfortable with (I can take pictures here at school if you like too, but you might have fun pics that would work even better.)
    • Taylor graciously allowed me to play with this idea.  Below is a sample of what it would look like.  (Thank you Taylor!) -Click here to see the whole feature.

Also, check out what happened in the Elementary office while we were gone...No more running in to someone at the copy machine in the mail room!  Thank you to the custodial staff and Brad for coordinating this project!

Last but not least, I hope you all have a wonderful holiday week that is full of relaxation and all the things that fill your bucket.  I have all three of my kids home for the weekend and we are planning a Toy Story marathon on Black Friday.  See you all in December!

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • 5K students practicing their skills with quickly and quietly transition from lockers to the classroom.
  • 4K students enjoying their teacher reading the book called "The Book with No Pictures." They were so engaged in the literacy activity.
  • 3rd graders writing equations for 2-step story problems.  Listening to them explain how they got the equation was so insightful!
  • I can't wait to see Dodgeland's version of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. Students during library have been hard at work making their own "floats" for the parade!

What's Happening at Dodgeland?

  • Monday, November 25
    • Coach Jena will be here for recess from 11-1:30pm to watch our playworks activities in action
    • School Board meeting @ 6:30
  • Tuesday, November 26
    • Winners of the Attendance challenge will be announced at the end of the day
    • Last day of school before Thanksgiving break
  • November 27-November 29
    • No School.  Enjoy your break with your family and friends!

Nitty-Gritty

  • IMC- The IMC is a busy, busy place!  Almost all of our 330 Elementary students enter this location weekly. (Not to mention how many of the 400+ MS/HS students enter the library every week.)
    • The goal of the IMC is to be a resource for students, a place to learn new skills, share a love of books, ask questions, create new things, and get help with technology.  It is also a place for staff to find professional resources, help with planning or organizing resources for upcoming lessons, and learning from peers.
    • Click here to see a weekly schedule of the predictable events that take place in the library.  Use this calendar when planning to use the IMC for projects, research, book checkout, etc.
To accomplish these IMC goals, it is important to have a system that allows all of them to be met, in some cases simultaneously.
    • First, when students come to the IMC, they should be aware of their purpose before arriving.  To help with this and to aid in clear communication, there will be copies of IMC passes put in mailboxes by next Tuesday, Nov 26.  The pass will be similar to the nurse and Oasis passes. It will help adults assist students, and also to keep them accountable for their time in the IMC.  This would include students that need assistance with technology/devices.
    • Second, our tech integrationists (Kay and Christina) strive to be helpful when planning lessons, units or projects that utilize technology.  In order to support the learning objectives, they need time to research and gather materials, plan alongside teachers, and help teach the skills needed to complete the activity.  Please utilize their expertise while keeping in mind that the more time devoted to planning, the more successful the project will be.  A week's notice prior to teaching the lesson is usually adequate.
  • Lunch Procedures: After the break, I'd like to have a refresh of lunch procedures on Monday, Dec 2 in the morning.  Students have been getting louder and forgetting manners more often in the past couple of weeks.  I will be putting together another video to help our students see and understand the expectations of the lunch period.  Just giving you a heads up.
  • Reminder:  If you need tech assistance right away, please call ext. 1222.  If there is no answer, you can call ext 1000 and ask Marie if she can radio for help.
  • Hallway Door entrance - FYI: The doorstop to the door by the elementary office has been removed.  There is a time setting on the locks so that the door is unlocked at the following times:

    • 6:30am - 8:00am
    • 12:00pm - 1:05 pm
    • 3:00pm - 6:00pm

PD Spotlight

I don't know if it is because I am more aware of it, or if it is because Thanksgiving is around the corner, but I seem to notice so many students and adults interacting positively and thanking others.  Below is a link to a very short blog post from George Couros.  As a mom, I tell my children that even if others are not always kind, it will always feel good to be kind to others.  Respecting yourself and being kind and positive is more important than responding to unkindness with negativity.  That interaction might feel good in the moment, but it won't last.  I like how Mr. Couros adds another layer to that here, by adding in, that you will never know which kind word or action will have an impact on another.  Wouldn't you rather that impact be a positive one?

Nitty-Gritty

  • Thank you for your time on Wednesday during the staff meeting.  I hope you were all able to get an idea or two from your colleagues that helps.  If you have a situation that you would like to talk through with me, please let me know!
  • If you haven't shared the priority standards document for your grade level, please do so.  I would like to work with them to compile them in a format that allows us to see the whole school in one chart.  If you have already done this, thank you very much!
  • An email went out to staff members that notified me that they would like to work on a math or phonics analysis team.  If you would like to join this team, please let me know!

PD Spotlight

  • I wanted to use this week's PD Spotlight to highlight the PinkCast video that I showed on Wednesday for all staff that may not have been able to be there.  Click here to watch the 100 second video.  I am challenging us to do this every day here at Dodgeland.  I wonder what effects, if any, there will be on our work environment.  Will our students mimic us?  How will that affect the climate at our school?  I think it is worth our time to try to influence others in a way that helps build habits of kindness.  It will take time, but I believe it will happen!  Every day, every minute is important.  What a great career we have!

  • Veteran's Assembly Today -
    • There will be a modified recess schedule for Friday morning due to the assembly.  Grades K-2 will go outside for recess from 9-9:15.  (This will hopefully give everyone enough time to get to the gym for the assembly before 9:30.)
    • Our Veterans LOVE to shake hands with all of the Elementary students as they enter the gym.  (Really all the kids love it too!) This does take awhile though, 3rd-5th grade please start arriving by 9:15 so that all students can be seated by 9:30 to start the assembly on time.
    • Remind students of the purpose of this assembly and appropriate behaviors for assemblies before coming to the HS Gym.
  • Staff Meeting -
    • Please bring a device with you to the staff meeting on Wednesday.
  • 1st Quarter Pride Assembly -
    • During the assembly on Thursday, we will announce Students that are "On-a-Roll" this quarter.  This can be for academic reasons or behavior/SEL reasons.  Click here to nominate a student for this award.  Interventionists, specialists, support staff, etc, feel free to nominate here too.
      • The Tech Ninjas are also working on a short video to share at the assembly as well.
      • Teachers, please bring your iPad to the assembly.
  • PLTW
    • The PLTW sign up is here.  Not all classrooms have signed up yet.  Please check out when you'd like to teach your module so that all students have access to the modules for their grade by the end of the year.  Just trying to head off frustration for students and staff with supplies and space to work.  Thanks everyone.

PD Spotlight

As the 1st quarter ended, it occurred to me that 25% of the year is already over.  How can that be?  It made me think of all the learning that our students still get to do this year.  It also made me think about teaching/leading with a sense of urgency.  It ties in beautifully to our attendance initiative.  Every day matters.  Every class period we get to spend teaching, coaching and prompting students through their learning is a gift.  As the adults in the room, it is our responsibility to protect those instructional minutes.  We all know how many tasks and things we juggle in a day.  I, too, find myself getting thrown off course some days.  I get to the end of the day, and think, what did I do today?  How is the day over already?  All of us have found ourselves in this situation, however, this has the potential of losing minutes to things that are not a part of most important pieces of school: Instruction and guided/independent practice by students.  Below is a quote from Regie Routman that resonates with me and is helping me regain my own sense of urgency.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • Students beginning a PLTW unit and so engaged in the lesson they didn't notice me in the room!
  • Students did a great job with this week's Lock Down Drill.  I know this is because of the preparation and calm demeanor of their teachers.
  • A number of people dropping things to help out at the fundraiser pick-up.  The work was so much easier with help!
  • I got to sit in on a number of positive, compassionate and organized parent teacher conferences.  Our parents are noticing your work through what their children say at home and are quite impressed.  The story I heard today was a child telling their parent that they "dipped her bucket" when he said something to her.  It caused the parent to think about how the family communicates at home.  How great is that!

What's Happening at Dodgeland?

Nitty-Gritty

  • Playworks Coaching - Coach Jena will be back for the final coaching visit for Playworks in the classroom training.  This time around, she will be observing you teach a game that your class has not played before as well as a debrief surrounding an SEL skill.  Then Jena will teach a game while you observe.  The last 10 min. I will cover your classroom while you connect with Jena.  See Jena's email or click here for the schedule.  (If anyone would be willing to switch with Taylor Huso, she is looking for a new time.)
  • Report Cards - All grades are due on Tuesday morning at 7:30 am.  Report cards will be run to check for errors by Wednesday.  Report cards should be distributed on Thursday, Nov 7 with students.
  • PLTW - After meeting with both Sue and Kevin, I have a document to help us plan for PLTW teaching for this school year.  Our goal is for each classroom to teach two modules this school year.
    • The modules for grades K-2 can be done in your classroom.  However, you will have to coordinate with the other teachers in your grade.  The module can not be taught in the same grade at the same time due to material shortage.
    • Most of the modules for grades 3-5 use the Vex kit and there is enough materials for 2 classrooms to teach a module needing a Vex kit at one time.  (This is so the projects can be created and kept in tact between sessions.) Click here to sign up for a time period for your classroom to teach the modules this school year.
  • Weather -  So this week's horrible weather snuck up on a lot of our families.  Many of our students did not come to school with hats, mittens, boots, and in some cases even a coat.  Please ask students if they have these things in their locker to put on.  (Some have them, but choose not to wear them.)  Others may need to borrow some from the supply we have at school.  Let me know if you need any help with winter supplies for a student.  We have some options right at school.
  • Veteran's Assembly - The annual Veteran's Assembly is scheduled for Friday, Nov 8 from 9:30-10:30.  Please dress professionally as there will be many guests in our building for this K-12 assembly.  In order to preserve as much instruction time as we can, but also to help our youngest students attend to the assembly, outside recess will be held for grades 5K-2 from 9:00-9:15. If the weather prohibits outdoor recess, it will be canceled due to the guests in the commons.  There will be no outside morning recess for grades 3-5. Please play a playworks game in your classrooms before and/or after the assembly.
  • Math and Phonics Committee: Please email me by Friday, November 8, if you would like to be a primary or intermediate rep for a schoolwide committee to work on our math curriculum analysis or the phonics curriculum analysis.
  • Pride Assembly - Our 1st quarter pride assembly will be held on Thursday, November 14 from 2:30-3:00.  It is on a Thursday so that our 4K students can join us.  Two of the assemblies will be on Thursdays this year, and two of them are on Fridays.

  • I subscribe to a number of education blogs.  The one that I read this week from George Couros is the one I would like to share with you this week.  Click here to read the whole post.  The quote below is in the post.  It strikes me that it is so true, and yet, in many places inside our school building, we get to see this happen too.  In fact, I watched a couple of young students beam with pride when they had a good day behavior wise too.  Even as adults, we have the opportunity to grow and find joy in learning new things.  I learn many, many new things every day.  It keeps me engaged in my work, and allows me to find joy in the work as well, especially when I can tell it is better than the last time. This does not mean that this is easy, but it is worth it.  I get most of the students' names right when I talk to them.  It was a challenge to myself, and it's even harder when they put their snow gear on!  But it felt good to see them smile at me when I got their names right.  They were cheering me on, and I found joy in learning this small thing too.  Where do you see this joy in your classrooms?

Friday Funny

Last weekend, I celebrated my nephew's confirmation.  He has 3 cousins that were adopted from Bulgaria on the other side of his family.  We don't get to see them often because they live in Indianapolis, IN, but this week I told London that I would share her joke on my weekly blog as part of the Friday Funny.  She was super excited about this. (She is 8 years old.)

Here is her joke.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • A new substitute to our district complimented our staff on the excellent sub plans she always gets when she comes to our district.  She said it makes it so much easier for the students when she knows the routines/lessons so well.  (I totally agreed, based on my experience subbing this year so far too!)
  • Students referring to the problem solving wheel when discussing other ways to handle disagreements with classmates.
  • Students volunteering to help out cleaning up in the commons after they finish eating.
  • Third graders sharing writing pieces proudly and noting their application of an introduction and a conclusion and using punctuation!
  • Junior Coaches that are dependable, patient, and kind to our youngest students each and every day!

Nitty-Gritty

  • Popcorn:  The volunteers that make popcorn for our students each week would like us to help them a bit.  Each week they are guessing at how much popcorn they should be popping. Sometimes, they are way over and other weeks they run short and have to quickly make more.  They often arrive very early to begin popping so that it is done before the start of their work day.  It would help tremendously if they had a ballpark figure as to how many kids may be ordering popcorn.  On Thursday morning/afternoons, could you take a quick count of who thinks they may be buying popcorn on Friday morning.  We realize it may not be totally accurate, but it would help them be as efficient as possible.  Click here for the Popcorn tally form.
  • Please Note: Grades are due on TUESDAY, November 5 at 7:30am.
  • Reminder that Halloween costumes will not be worn at school.  (This week I had a student who was getting anxious about Halloween coming up and how it is a scary time of year.  Hopefully, by keeping the costumes out of the school, we can avoid some anxiety for children that feel this way too.)
  • Student of the Month:  Please fill in the chart for your class here by Thursday, Oct 31.

PD Spotlight

Last week, I talked about kindness and the issues some of our students are having in social interactions.  Again this week, unkind words have spread to physical reactions.  This is not to say that we haven't been modeling, praising, and focusing on being bucket fillers.  It does mean that we are going to stay the course and consistently spread the message.  Our students need it and it has so many benefits for them in the long run.  The link here shares some research regarding how kindness affects people.  I find this fascinating.  When I think about how I want the Dodgeland Elementary to feel, sound and look like, I have a clear image in my mind.  It is filled with warm smiles, kind words and actions, helpful students, and everyone happy to be here.  I can see it so clearly and I am committed to this mission.  Students that consistently show kindness to others will create a chain reaction that will help the entire building.  Please watch this two min. video that discusses some benefits of kindness.  My favorite line from the video is: "The thing about kindness is, it is just about the only thing in the world that doubles when you share it."  How awesome is that to think about?!

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • A first grader was reading a book to me during Literacy.  He started by saying, "This book is hard."  But he stuck with it, read every word, and was starting to use strategies to break down words and make meaning.
  • Writing pieces are coming along nicely in many classrooms.  I have seen many students in the past week that have persevered through this complex task, working on coping with their frustration and ultimately feeling good about their progress.
  • Staff expressing their thoughts and ideas professionally to others and myself with the purpose of making our school a great place for our kids to learn.
  • Quick, caring responses to help out fellow teachers with students that are struggling or in crisis.  As a professional, it is always nice to know when there is a fellow teacher(s) just around the corner ready, willing and able to help out when needed.

What's Happening at Dodgeland

Tuesday, 10/22 -
  • Optional meeting with Mindy regarding 2nd Step Resources (see below)

Wednesday, 10/23 -
  • Picture Retake Day
  • Newsletter article's due

Thursday, 10/24 -
  • Parent/Teacher Conferences 4-7:30 (Jenny's providing an early supper in the lounge for everyone!  It'll be ready at 3:00)

Friday, 10/25 -
  • Professional Development Day (agenda to be coming soon)

Nitty-Gritty

  • Some grade levels are looking at adding an SEL day into their WIN rotation schedule.  If your grade level is looking for resources to help with the plans for these lessons, Second Step has resources that accompany the lessons that Mindy teaches during GG.  On Tuesday, Oct 22 from 3:15-3:45pm, Mindy will have an OPTIONAL meeting in the EL PLTW lab to share and help staff members with logging in to the Second Step site, finding and downloading resources, and ideas to help both staff and students continue to work on these important SEL skills.  If you have any questions, please see Mindy.
  • I received a message from the program coordinator at UW-Oshkosh Literacy Graduate program.  They are investigating interest in creating a cohort that would meet in Beaver Dam starting in the Spring of 2020.  This cohort would lead to licensure as a reading teacher (1316) and optionally, a reading specialist (5017) and master's degree. Click here for the brochure and contact info. I don't know anything about the program, just passing on the information.
  • CESA #6 is looking for volunteers that may be interested in reading applications for the Herb Kohl Fellowship/Scholarship program.  Click here for more information.
  • I am so enjoying the opportunities that I have to continue to learn about our DES system, routines and procedures.  This week, I learned that there is a structure to record the outcomes of the parent contacts I am making or the responses that have been completed in Educlimber.  Then Educlimber emails out the update to staff who submitted the open review referrals.  Thank you for your patience with me.  Most of the open items in my open review Educlimber list, I had already addressed, but I did not know how nice it was to keep the notes in this central location and then have it automatically sent out to staff that need to know about it.  Now that I know this, it will be a much more efficient way of keeping staff members in the loop of the incidents that arise.
  • Parent/Teacher conferences are next week!  This is our opportunity to connect with our students' families.  A strong home/school connection helps our students tremendously.  If you would like my attendance for any conference please let me know.
  • Garth will be here to work with us to continue our work on prioritizing and creating the DES Target-Based Grading system for part of the PD day.  The agenda will be out soon to describe the full day of learning/work that will include other pieces of the day as well.

PD Spotlight

This week's PD Spotlight is slightly different.  I am relating what I am researching and what I've learned in the past with the realities of the weekly actions of our students. I am reminded that our students have already told us that an issue at Dodgeland in every part of our district, is that students are not nice to each other.  I believe this is contributing to the culture of the building, the preoccupation with social conflicts, and ultimately, the difficulty of attending to learning tasks.

I am finding in the last few weeks that I am spending much of my time sending the same message to student after student.  I know that Mindy in GG and classroom teachers send the same message.  My simple message is this:

At Dodgeland, we expect students to speak kindly to one another at all times, to respect each other's differences and use the words "please stop" when something is happening that is bothering them.

Lately, I have been hearing many unkind words being slung around from student to student.  In some cases, this is the start of more physical incidents as well.  It is never okay for students to use their hands/feet on someone else in anger (or really anytime).  Most students that I speak to know that hitting, punching, kicking, etc is wrong, but they don't have other ideas of what to do instead.  When I ask, "What could you have done instead?" is answered with either "I don't know" or "Don't hit."

Children by nature are mimics.  They mimic what they see, what they hear, including responses to stress that they have witnessed.  They are also impressionable and ready to learn new ways of behaving and responding.  We have the opportunity, and yes, the challenge of helping them to develop healthy social skill habits, regulation skills and coping strategies.   This is part of our work.

I am aware that GG lessons have centered around kindness and bucket-filling.  I believe that students understand what this means and can discuss these ideas in detail in classrooms.  The generalization and application is where the breakdown seems to be occurring.

So, I have been thinking about how I could piggy-back off of Mindy's GG lessons.  Is there another way that I can send the same message, but through my lens?

One thought I have is to prepare a short lesson that I can deliver to your classroom in the coming weeks.  Or, I could prepare a video to show students with my message.  Behind the scenes, I have been and will continue to send the message of expecting kindness/respect.  I will share the same message with every parent that I interact with and consistently ask students to practice tone of voice, kind words, and resolving conflicts using the problem solving wheel.

Please speak to me if you'd like my assistance with this in your classrooms.  In the meantime, thank you for continuing to expect kindness, praising students that exhibit kind words and actions, and modeling for them how to treat all people in our school with respect and kindness.  Remember, there is always a student (or 2 or 3...) that is watching us.  What a fantastic job we get to do each day!

October 11, 2019

What a week huh?  :-)

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • Students teaching Mrs. Huelsman all about their routines in their classrooms.  Every class I got to be with this week knew the routines and procedures.  Great job everyone!!!
  • Problem-solving as a team to help students in crisis.  Teamwork will yield results for the whole system, not just that student.
  • 4th grade Jr Coaches are getting our 5K students to follow the lunch dismissal routine quicker and quicker every week.  They may be teachers in the making!  They are consistent and kind and calm!
  • A new guest teacher to our district told Marie and I how much she likes coming to Dodgeland.  She stated that everyone is so kind and helpful to her.  (Of course, we knew that, but it was nice to hear!)

What's Happening at Dodgeland
  • Tuesday - Field trips for 5K and 1st grade
  • Wednesday - Field trip for 4K and Grade Level meeting for grade 2 and WORKOUT Wednesday!
  • Friday - 3rd grade field trip
  • Is that all???  (Let me know if I missed anything!)
Nitty-Gritty
  • The bus company contacted me this week with a concern.  While they are dropping off in the morning, there often are balls rolling across the bus lane. No one wants a student to get hurt, so if you are on bus duty outside, students can start to play with basketballs, kickballs, etc after 7:40am to avoid this issue.
  • I could still use one more person to help me with the fundraiser pick-up after school on October 30 at 3pm for 45min to an hour.  If you are interested, please let me know.
  • WIN should be starting soon.  If you need any help with planning, please let me know.
  • CESA 6 President's Day Proposals - Dr. Thompson emailed out earlier this week details about proposals to present at this year's President's Day Spring into Success PD day.  If you would like to present, please submit a proposal to me by Friday, October 18. Below are the details sent from CESA.
    • The expectations for presenting include:
      • If selected, you will present up to four times (same presentation) at two different locations.
      • The presentation time is one hour.
      • Your presentation should be motivational with the following structure:
        • Story hook
        • 1-3 strategies participants can walk out with and use immediately
        • Turn and talk time
  • The directions to batch print the i-Ready reports for families is here.
  • To follow up from the staff meeting, if you want to look over the discipline flow chart, click here. (It is on page 11-12.)

PD Spotlight

Earlier this week, I shared this video at the Mentors/Mentees book study.  It is only 2 min. but it has stayed with me all week.  It's the very end of the video that gets to me.  I reflect on this in my home, with my family and yes with our students.  This is why it is so important to me that we work together to help our students build SEL skills and problem solve around what our students need.  What is their behavior communicating to us?  We have the opportunity and a compelling reason looking at us each and every day!

Friday Funny

This week's funny is a true story from my life.  Below are two screen shots of a conversation between Lexi (green) and my son (gray) who is in Milwaukee.  The conversation was just before 11pm last night.  Enjoy!

  • Staff working together to plan WIN groups based on student need so students have what they need each week.
  • Communication about concerns and celebrations in a professional and problem solving way.
  • Staff working together to create and follow plans for students that are struggling in school.

    • Early Release at 2:20
    • Parade Line-up starts at 3:30 to start at 4pm
Nitty-Gritty
  • Homecoming Friday:  Next Friday the Pep assembly is starting at 1pm.  If 3-5 teachers can meet us in the commons at 12:55 to escort students to the gym, we can alleviate extra transitions.  The assembly is scheduled to finish around 2:00-2:10.  This year, students will be sitting on the floor in front of the bleachers in front of the MS/HS students.  Students in K-2 will need to be dismissed from recess early as well in order to get to the  HS gym on time for the assembly. More clarifications will come next week as well.

  • As you complete your WIN groups, please record them on the WIN document. Along the side indicate the plan for the week.  Which days will be reading, which days are Math?  Who is in a SEL group?  What is the focus of that SEL group?  Are any students getting EL support during WIN?

  • Student of the Month - So I may have overlooked this earlier this week!  Click here to fill in the Student of the Month for your class.  I plan to announce this on Wednesday, October 9.

  • XPD's - Have you registered for XPD's for this year?  If you need to change or want to add any courses, just log in with the password you created when you first registered.  It will give you the option to remove courses you have already registered for, or the check boxes to add courses.  If there is a limit to the number of participants, it is listed next to the course.  The site is:  www.regpacks.com/XPD

  • Attendance Initiative - If your class fills in each box of the October attendance chart, please take a picture of the class with the sheet and send it to me to use for an attendance collage.  If you have any questions or concerns or need help with the classroom prize, please let me know!

  • Thinking ahead:  Fundraiser pick-up is on October 30 after school.  If there are 2-3 people that would be willing to help for 45min-1hr after school, I would very much appreciate the help.  The company sorts it well, we just have to find the numbered box for each family as they come in.

PD Spotlight

This week for the PD Spotlight, I decided to share this video.  The video is about 8 min. long.  If you do not have enough time to watch the whole thing, watch from 5:40 to 6:50.  The purpose of this video is to share ideas of how to help parents reinforce and teach SEL skills within their homes.  Many of our students will mimic things they see or experience in their homes.  I found some of the pieces of this video to be helpful as I interact with parents as well.  During Parent/Teacher Conferences later this month, you may choose to share about our SEL instruction this year.  The 5 ideas presented here may give you ideas to talk with parents about.

As we continue our work this year on learning about our own SEL skills, and how to help our students gain and improve their skills, I am reminded that this learning is not just a 30 min. weekly lesson in GG.  This is how we interact with each other, with all students, and the overall culture of our building.  Without this carry over, students will struggle to consistently use healthy and positive SEL skills when under stress.  I believe that over time, our students will not only thrive in the culture we are creating together at Dodgeland, but also be ready to learn.  Their achievements in school will continue to improve as well.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye
  • WOW!  I saw some awesome brain break activities this week in every grade in the school.  Coach Jena mentioned over and over how impressed she was with our students and the routines that are so well established across the school.  That is all because of teachers' hard work this month!!
  • So many people ready, willing and able to step in wherever needed, whether it was covering a short time in the Oasis, helping out in classrooms with sick teachers or students, and even helping out in students in other buildings.  I am so grateful for the teamwork we are building here.
  • Coach Jena made a mistake in a few rooms when teaching the Ninja Master game.  (It previously had a different name, and she slipped into the old name out of habit a couple of times.)  When she explained her mistake, one classroom had a bunch of students that told her that mistakes are the opportunity to learn and that she doesn't have it YET!  She about fell over as they were encouraging her!

What's Happening at Dodgeland

Tuesday, 10/1
  • Fundraiser Packets due
  • Flu Shot clinic 2:30-4:30
  • Attendance Initiative starts for month of October

Wednesday, 10/2
  • Vision Screening (Click here for schedule.)
Thursday, 10/3
  • Literacy discussion at 3:15 in the IMC (open to all staff that want to express concerns, ideas, etc regarding literacy and students' strengths and challenges in this area.)
Looking ahead:
Homecoming starts Oct 7.  There will be an all school pep assembly on Friday at 1:10 followed by an early release at 2:20, parade is at 4pm.  The elementary parade line-up will include students in grades 3-5 this year.

Nitty-Gritty
  • Attendance Initiative:  The goal of the attendance challenges is to encourage students to be in school everyday, on time.  For October, you received a sign that says Trick or treat.  Each day that everyone in your class is present, cross of one letter.  When the entire word is crossed off, your class earns a prize that your class determines. Some options might be:  an extra recess, lunch with the teacher, popcorn for everyone on a Friday, etc.
    • In November, there will be a staff vs. students challenge.  Which group has the highest attendance rate?  Stay Tuned for more details.
  • WIN: Click here for the WIN document.  If your grade level needs my assistance with planning or creating WIN groups, please let me know.  The document is a place to record each group for each grade.  This will help me as I plan for grade level data meetings. The groups may include students that will be seeing Rose during WIN as well. Thank you in advance!
  • Schedules:  As the month is winding down, our routines and schedules are becoming more and more solidified.  If you haven't shared a classroom schedule with me yet, please give me a paper copy or make sure it is on our grade level document.  If I have any questions about your schedule, I will let you know.  Otherwise, I just plan to use it to help me keep track of what our students are doing across the school and when.
  • XPD's:  If you are interested in any of the XPD's in this year's catalog, the registration for it is online this year.  Click here to register for courses.
PD Spotlight
  • This week for the PD spotlight I wanted to share a post about picture books that can be used to teach certain SEL skills.  I find using literature to be a great way to illustrate a theme or skill that is sometimes abstract to learn.  When I came across this list, I thought, "Hey, this would be really helpful."  I have used the book Enemy Pie by Derek Munson with 4th-5th graders in the past.  It is an easy and fun book to read aloud, but also a book that helps students learn how to make connections with others.  If you have used any of these books in a lesson that went well, I'd love to hear about it!

PD Spotlight

I know I have referenced Daniel Pink's short videos called The PinkCast before.  I love how he is able to drill down and give information to make you think, it's practical and in a short amount of time.  Click here to watch a 2-min. video that describes how to best take a break.  At our last staff meeting, we discussed how the Oasis provides a break to help our students get back to their upstairs brain and ready to learn.  We related it to ourselves and our own need for a break sometimes.  Many of the things in his list are provided to our students in the Oasis.  How can we use these ideas for ourselves too?

Friday Funny

This week's Friday funny is a story from years ago when I taught 1st grade.  I truly love having conversations with children every day, but sometimes a conversation just sticks with me.  This one makes me laugh and also makes me think.

One day, a little girl in my class came in to school with a patterned skirt, knee socks, a bright colored shirt, a vest and about 20 barrettes in her hair, none of which matched. She proudly walked in to the room and said, "Hi Mrs. Huelsman!  Look at my outfit!  I picked it out all by myself!"  Of course, I responded with a smile and an enthusiastic "WOW! You are so independent!" (Yes, I was used to working with Middle School students still!)

She then said, "Ya, my dad said that it was SOME OUTFIT!"  She was all smiles and skipped to her desk.  So while her dad knew that it was not necessarily a matching outfit, she took his words as a compliment and was a happy girl all day.  Her dad let her bask in her accomplishment and didn't diminish her happiness and pride.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could have moments like this as adults too?  Someone notices our work, gives us a sincere compliment, and we are safe to feel pride in our own accomplishments. I can't wait to see what we all accomplish together this year!

  • As we learned during the Playworks in the Classroom training in August, our coach is coming back to help us implement ideas in our classrooms across the school.  She will visit all classrooms from 5K-5th grade during the same week in 35 min blocks. Jena will be modeling a brain break/game (one for the primary grades and a different one for the 3-5 grades for approximately 12 min.) . Then she will observe each classroom with a brain break you have tried this month.  The last 10 min. will be Q/A with Jena to ask questions and receive helpful feedback.  I will be coming around with a schedule to get each classroom signed up.

  • i-Ready testing - The Fall testing window is open.  Please let me know if you need any help or support to complete the testing before September 27.

I follow a blog called Two Writing Teachers.  They have a lot of really great posts every week and sometimes even more often than that.  This post that I read this summer has stuck with me for 2 reasons.
  1. The book that the author highlights reminds me of a number of wonderful, lovable children that we get to teach at Dodgeland.  I felt that this title would speak to a few of our students.
  2. The author interview that follows adds insight into what the child with high energy may need to be successful in a workshop model in the classroom.
Hopefully you find this helpful as well.

PD Spotlight
Many of you have heard me talk about the idea of asking for help last week. As I was reflecting on this episode of the PinkCast, I think about how hard this is for me and many others.  I truly value collaboration and working as a team, but even then, I find it difficult to ask for help for things even when I feel overwhelmed with the number of items on my to-do list.  Educators traditionally have been in a career that was very isolating.  Teachers had their class, closed the door and had to do everything on their own.  Thankfully, we don't teach during this time period anymore.  As you all have demonstrated with your feedback and work this week alone, when we work together we come up with systems and plans together.  This video packs some thoughtful ideas in just 109 seconds.  I hope you find it as useful as I did.
