 Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • Shout out to all the staff members that have had new students starting since we have come back from winter break!  I know that you have all helped them feel welcome and have had extra work to figure out new schedules, and pairing them up with others, and then helping them to fit in to the curriculum.  Thank you so much for all you do for our students!
  • Shout out to Teresa who constantly impresses me with her attention to detail, her planning skills, her patient and firm guidance for students struggling, and even stepping out of her comfort zone to use puppets to teach little ones! Way to go, we are lucky to have you here at Dodgeland!
  • A HUGE thank you to all that have endured indoor recess all week. (and the aftermaths of having indoor recess all week!) Today I heard about a string of days in WI in 1961 where they went 17 days straight before they had a day that had an outside temp of 0 degrees.  Can you even imagine? I can't wait until we can walk outside without the air hurting my face!  ---And yes, this was before my time!

  • Did you forget to email me?
    • I'm still looking for people to teach summer school this year!  Even if you have a vacation planned in June, if you can teach for part of the session, it will be a big help!  If you don't know what you'd like to teach, let me know!  I love talking SUMMER SCHOOL!
  • Business Cards
    • If you need more business cards with referendum details on it, please let Patti, Kimi or myself know and we will get some into your mailboxes.

ML Information

💡 Quick Tip: Power Up Your Word Wall

For Multilingual Learners (MLs), a Word Wall shouldn't be "wallpaper"—it should be a working tool. Pairing academic terms with visuals provides a permanent scaffold that builds student independence.

Make it Interactive:

  • Add Visuals: Always pair a word with a photo, sketch, or icon.

  • Daily Interaction: Spend 2 minutes a day playing "I Spy" or "Point to the word that..." to keep the vocabulary fresh.

  • Bilingual Bridges: Encourage students to add translations in their home languages on sticky notes.

Examples by Grade:

  • Elementary: Pair science terms like Lifecycle with a diagram of a butterfly.

  • Middle School: Group words by roots (e.g., Micro- = small) with an image of a microscope.

High School: Post "Command Verbs" (e.g., Analyze, Contrast) alongside sentence starters to help with essay writing.

TechKnow Tip

Semester two is off and running! While you don't have a new roster of students, this halfway point is the perfect time to hit the "refresh" button on family engagement.

Communication often naturally slows down after the holidays. By reaching out now with a positive update or a "look how much we’ve learned" message, you are topping up your emotional bank account with families.

Sustaining these relationships is critical. If student behavior shifts or academic challenges arise later in the spring, addressing them will be much easier if the family feels connected to you now, rather than only hearing from you when things go wrong.

Don't forget the tools available to make this quick and easy:

Let’s keep the bridge strong between home and school for the rest of the year!

Friday Funny

My sisters, brother, parents and I have a group chat that we use frequently to share with each other what is going on in our lives, or random thoughts that someone has, but then sometimes there is a text that makes me really shake my head.  This is one sent from my brother back on Jan. 2 during a bowl game that he was watching on TV. Did anyone else see this?  This totally grosses me out!  Who thinks of stuff like this?!
(Spencer is my 22 year old nephew who is in college.)

Nitty-Gritty

  • NAEP Testing
    • Our 4th graders were selected to take the NAEP test (National Assessment of Educational Progress) for reading and math on Tuesday, 1/27/26.  There will be proctors in the building that have organized/planned the test, but some of the details are out of our control.  Here is what Elementary staff needs to know:
      • The IMC is closed all day on Tuesday for the testing.
      • Testing starts at 8:30 and 12:30 and half of the class is testing at each time.
      • One group will be testing in the PLTW lab, so please remind kids to be extra quiet when going by the room for specials, recess or lunch.
      • The 12:30 testing group of 4th graders will be eating at noon with the 4K/5K/1st grade students.
  • Data Meetings
    • This week we will start the next data meetings for mid-year assessments.  Please make sure to come to the meetings with any classroom data you have to add to the conversation.  In addition, what universal needs are you seeing you in your classrooms for this second half of the school year? Also, I needed to move the 3rd grade meeting. If this does not work for most of the team, we can look for another date. Please let me know.
  • HELP!
    • Brad shared with me this week that we are having an uptick of students that are breaking off headphones in their iPads. Can you please review the safest way to remove headphones from their iPads? In addition, please limit movement around the classroom with the headphones plugged in.  I've seen kids get the cords stuck on things or stepped on that sometimes ends up ripping them out of the iPad which sometimes causes this problem as well.  Thank you in advance!
  • Referendum Update
    • Please make sure to take 15 min. to watch Mr. Greco's video explaining the referendum question and how the money will be used. There is a good chance that parents or community members will ask you questions about the referendum.  By staying up to date, you will be able to give the facts and details to help our community make an informed decision.  Click on the link HERE to watch his video.
  • Parent-Teacher Conferences
    • Conferences are only about 2 weeks away. (Feb. 11). If you would like me to attend any conferences with you, please let me know as soon as you can so that I can get it on my calendar. If you are thinking about retention, please make an appointment to talk about this with me as soon as possible. My calendly link is HERE.
  • Spring Concerts
    • The music department met last week and we needed to make some slight adjustments to the dates for the elementary concerts.  Please mark your calendars for the following dates:
      • 5K-2nd grade - May 13 @ 6:30pm
      • 3rd-5th grade - May 14 @ 6:30pm
      • 4K concert - May 14 @ 2:30pm
  • Social Media Posts
    • It is very important, now more than ever, to continue to share posts for social media that tell our community about all the learning and wonderful things we do inside this building. Telling our story helps our families and community members stay involved and informed about our school.  When you send the posts to me, please make sure that you are also sharing any pics on Google Drive with Sam. When I forward them, he can't always open them to get them posted.  I look through them first, but ultimately, he ends up posting it. If he has access to the pictures, the process goes faster. Thank you! (Feel free to send one even if you are not on the calendar for that week too!)
  • Summer School
    • Are you on the fence???  Let's chat!  Summer School is a fun time and you get to choose what you'd like to teach!  What could be better?  The session runs from June 3 through July 2, Mon-Thurs from 8-12:30 (Teachers' hours are 7:30-12:30.). Here is the link if you need to sign up!

ML Information

Welcome to the Second Semester! This “3rd Quarter’s” tips will be about Academic Language & Scaffolding for Independence. Thank you again for all of your support and flexibility during ACCESS testing.

Teaching academic vocabulary isn't just about learning new words; it’s about giving our Multilingual Learners (MLs) the keys to unlock complex content. While "Tier 1" words are everyday speech and "Tier 3" words are technical (like isosceles or photosynthesis), Tier 2 words are the "power verbs" and connectors that appear across all subjects.

Mastering these words is central to WIDA Standard 3 (Mathematics) and Standard 4 (Science, Social Studies, and Arts) because they allow students to demonstrate their thinking regardless of the topic.

🛠 Quick Tips for Your Classroom

  • Create a "Word Wall" of Power Verbs: Group Tier 2 words by function. For example, put analyze, examine, and inspect together so students see they are related.

  • Explicit Modeling: Don't just say "analyze this." Show them! Think aloud: "When I analyze this graph, first I look at the X-axis, then I look for patterns..."

Total Physical Response (TPR): Create a hand gesture for each word. For "Compare," you might hold both hands out like a scale.

TechKnow Tip

We have the opportunity to test out a new resource called Scholastic Teachables. If you are a fan of BookFlix, you will definitely want to check this out! Scholastic Teachables is an online database of printable practice activities and short texts that align with the themes of BookFlix to drive deeper into knowledge and stronger literacy skills. Click this link to see an attached sample activity from Scholastic Teachables—ready to copy and share with students. We get to preview this resource until March 9th, after which I would LOVE your feedback.

Friday Funny (on a Sunday!)

This weekend, the girls and I went to see a comedian in Madison named Zoltan Kaszas. I've been a fan of his for quite some time, but this was the first time I got to see him live. (This was my Christmas present from Lexi and it was AWESOME!) He lives in San Diego and he was not a fan of our weather last week! He told us that before he got here, he didn't understand why you would keep counting the temperature once it is below zero. Cold is cold. But his words were, "I have learned that there is a BIG DIFFERENCE between -5 and -20 degrees. I learned that at -20 each nose hair freezes in .3 seconds and I've never experienced that in my life. I also learned that I do not have clothes for this state and weather." The dopamine hit from the night was just what I needed. I'm including a short clip below to introduce him to you if you've never heard of him before. If you have a chance to see him live, I highly recommend!

  • Budget Money
    • The last day to spend money from your budget for this school year is February 28.  Please be conscientious and only order what you need for this school year for your classroom. Remember, you can not forward spend by purchasing this for future classes/years.
  • Summer School Staff Needed!
    • I am looking for people interested in teaching this summer! It is a really fun way to teach new classes, interact with students in a different way and to stay connected during the summer too!  If you are interested, please complete the link HERE.
  • February Newsletter
    • If you have anything you'd like to put in the February newsletter, please send to Patti by Friday, Jan. 23. This is another way to share with our parents what is happening at our school and provide ways they can support their children's education. Thank you in advance for your input!

TechKnow Tip

If you have a teacher assistant, please be sure to enter a grade for them. This needs to be completed by ALL elementary, middle, and high school teachers who have a TA. Once logged into PowerSchool, select “Dodgeland High School” from the drop-down in the top right corner. Select “PowerTeacher Pro” under one of your teacher assistant courses. Select “Grading” along the left and then “Traditional” under the grades tab. Click on the white box under “S1” and select “P” (pass) or “F” (fail) along the right. Select the green “Save” button. Once the grade is saved, select “Final Grade Status”. In the pop-up window, check the semester 1 (S1) and select “Save”.

ML Information

We know that Differentiated Instruction is the heartbeat of ML success. But you don't need to create three different lesson plans! Instead, try modifying the output.

The Tip of the Week:: Keep the same grade-level content, but adjust how students show they’ve learned it based on their proficiency level:

  • Emerging (Level 1-2): Have students point to pictures, circle key terms, or use a "Word Bank" to label a diagram.

  • Expanding (Level 3-4): Provide Sentence Frames (e.g., "The main cause of the revolution was ____ because ____.")

  • Bridging (Level 5): Ask for a short paragraph but provide a Graphic Organizer to help them structure their academic language.

The Result: You aren't lowering the bar; you're just building a sturdier ladder.

Friday Funny

Does anyone else love watching clips from the Graham Norton show?  I am addicted to watching this show. Here is one of the clips that makes me giggle.  Hope you enjoy it!

 Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • 5th Graders got to participate in a hands-on experiment simulating the fur trade in the early ages of our country.  There were some very active and strong negotiators in the room.  :-) Way to go Klair!
  • 1st graders working on their work places and all on task.  The group I got to talk to were able to explain their game as well! I love watching their math brains grow! (You should be super proud of your students, Mary Jo!)
  • Shout out to Mrs. Caine (Trisha) for modeling how to deal with unexpected issues and visitors!  It just happens sometimes that your links don't work right away, but her class saw her patiently work through it without getting angry or frustrated. She also got a chance to explain to Lydia that having me come into the room is really no big deal.  No need to ever be nervous about that.  I am working on getting to all of your rooms much more often. :-)
  • It was great to see kids again and all of you this week. Thank you for the work you put in to review expectations and get kids back into the swing of learning.  We are almost halfway through the year. We don't want to waste any of the precious time we have with our students.

Nitty-Gritty

  • Fire Inspector Visit
    • This week the fire inspector came through the building. One of the things that was noted was regarding items hanging from the ceiling throughout the room.  When we do this, it introduces a more flammable item closer to the ceiling tiles, which then makes them more likely to burn more quickly.  Please significantly limit anything hanging from hooks throughout your classrooms.
  • Alt Comp Checkmark - Update
    • After much consideration and discussion, a change is being made for checkmarks for alt. comp relating to student teachers. Any teacher that takes on a student teacher or intern for 8 weeks can earn a checkmark.  If you were to have a student teacher for the entire semester, that is equal to 2 checkmarks.  This won't go back to previous years, nor will there be checkmarks for practicum students, but will be going forward for any student teacher placements for the length of 8 weeks. To clarify, if you have had a student teacher/intern for at least 8 weeks during the 2025-26 school year, this will earn you one checkmark for this year and will be added to the documents for upcoming years as well.
  • 3K/4K Screening is coming up
    • If you have any families or know of any residents that are interested in their child(ren) entering our 3K or 4K programs for next school year, please direct them to our website, or to Patti/me to get signed up for a time on our screening day on Monday, Feb 16, 2026.  This is only for students that are not currently attending Dodgeland.  (Our current 3K students do not have to come in for a screening time.) The link to sign up is below if you want to send it to anyone as well.  https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0F4FA5AB2DA6F49-61159800-3k4k
    • You may notice that this is during our PD day next month.  This means we will have visitors in the building during our day.
  • Winter Assessment Window
    • i-Ready and AimsWeb winter assessments can be started for both math and reading. Please work together so that students have the accommodations they need to do their best work. The link to the AimsWeb document is HERE.  This will tell you what subtests are needed for each grade for both math and reading. If you have any questions, please let me know.
  • Summer School!
    • I'm getting ready to start planning for summer school.  The dates haven't been decided on yet and I'd like to think about adding some creative ways to provide additional learning for our students this summer.  Perhaps have one of our typical programs in June (ending on July 2) and then perhaps some specific week-long (or 2 week sessions) with a theme.  If you are interested in summer school for teaching/working, please fill in this google form.

ML Information

Our ML students have had a busy and impressive week! Most students have finished the ACCESS testing, and my plan is to have everyone done by the end of next week.) Fingers Crossed because I know exams and other testing begin soon.)

They’ve poured so much effort into finishing their ACCESS testing before the end-of-semester rush, and their commitment to doing their best is truly inspiring.

To see these students in action is to see incredible mental agility. Answering these questions requires deep focus and sophisticated thinking, made even more impressive by the fact that they are balancing two different languages. I am so grateful to work with such a dedicated team—thank you for everything you do to support our students’ growth daily.

Tip of the Week:

Celebrate Progress.

Acknowledge and celebrate every small step of progress, from a single new word learned to a successfully completed sentence. This builds confidence and motivation.

Don’t forget you can find even more resources here: Dodgeland Teacher Resources. You can also feel free to email me or schedule an appointment! 😀

Friday Funny

I really do not like to cook, but I can cook.  If you ever have a chance to meet my mother, she will contend that her daughter was taught to cook and gets very offended when my children complain about how their mom doesn't cook/doesn't know how to cook.

However, I was lucky and had a husband who LOVED to cook and was good at it.  So I didn't have to.  And then, well, you know what happened with that.  But then my son took over the cooking and once again I was off the hook.  But now, he's gone too (moved out, not gone...sheesh, words matter!) and so the three Huelsman's are left to duke it out over who is going to do this now.  I submit this clip to you all about a poor soul that also probably would love to have family members do the cooking.  I have seen this clip multiple times, and every time I can barely breathe from laughing so hard.  I don't know what gets me more, the one guy's body language, the questions ("Is it edible?"), the statements ("It burns!") or the poor cook's exclamation, "Something is terribly wrong!"  Enjoy this and keep in mind I have limited times that I personally contribute to goodie tables for this very reason! Ella/Lexi are MUCH better than I am at this whole cooking/baking thing.

Nitty-Gritty

  • Breakfast Duty
    • If you have breakfast duty, students can be dismissed to go outside if they finish eating before 7:42am.  If it is after that time, please keep them in the commons until 7:45 when they can go to their classrooms.  If it is indoor bus duty in the morning, please direct them to the appropriate place if it is before 7:42am.
  • Personnel Updates
    • Starting on Monday, Jan 5, there are some changes in staff assignments that we want all staff to be aware of.  Samantha K. will be joining the 2nd/3rd grade special education team at 8am and Chrissy Manthey will be moving to work with the 3K program in the mornings and then move to 5K/1st grade from 11:30-3:05pm.  There will be some changes in recess, lunch, etc. coverages, but just wanted you all to be aware of this.
  • Semester 1 is ending on January 21!
    • It will be here very soon, so please look ahead to plan for completing first semester report cards.  They will be due to Patti on January 26 at 8am.

ML Information

Providing leveled texts—offering a variety of texts on the same topic at different reading levels—is a critical instructional practice for K–12 teachers, especially when working with Multilingual Learners (MLs). Watch this video to find out why!

Don’t forget you can find even more resources here: Dodgeland Teacher Resources. You can also feel free to email me or schedule an appointment😀

Recess Information

Just a quick reminder about these details that were changed in December!

Bus Duty
4k/5k - stay the course :)
1st-5th - please have the students just keep their backpack/stuff with them. Since they will just be sitting to watch a show, they can keep their things in their laps.

3rd-5th - there are too many kids in room 137 so Mrs. Huso's kids, please to go 102, Mrs. Juech's kids, please stay in room 137. Please also have the kids just keep their stuff in their laps.

Teachers, please clarify/let your students know where they should go for bus duty. *Students that need breakfast should still report to the commons like always.*
Room 109 - 4k and 5k
Room 102 - 1st, 2nd, and Huso
Room 137, Juech, 4th, and 5th

Indoor Recess
MS/HS gym space is not always available so we need to make a change to location when the multipurpose room is unavailable for lunch recess.

Everyday day except Tuesdays
5k - room 137 (PLTW lab) with cart activities
1st - room 102 (Den)

Tuesdays only
2nd grade - room 102 (Den)
3rd grade - room 137 (PLTW lab)

All other grades/times will still have the choice between 102 and the multipurpose room.

Friday Funny!

Just some laughs for you!  See you all soon!
