 Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • Some students are communicating with us that a change is coming in their routine through their actions this week. I have witnessed a number of staff members that are addressing these behaviors with patience, kindness and consistency.
  • Sunshine committee kept us entertained this week with the Turkey in your pocket game!  It was very fun to watch this play out each day.  I also hear Olaf made an appearance this week too.  Hmmm...Mr. Cook - you are a good sport!
  • Shout out to Ms. Duhr who rocked her first e-team meeting with parents.  She was prepared, clear and professional!  Way to go!
  • Shout out to Watson and Mrs. Rollins who seem to always be there when one of our students needs some care.  Thank you for helping our students when they need help with regulation!

  • Student Photographer
    • Starting soon, you may see a student photographer coming around the school to take pictures for the website, newsletters, etc. They will have identification so that you know what they are doing.  If you have a special event, project or activity that you would like them to photograph, please let me know.  At this time, the photographer is available between 9:20-10am and 12:05-12:45pm.
  • December Duties!
    • It will be a brand new month when we come back. Support staff check the new duties for the month HERE.

ML Information

Happy Friday and Happy almost Thanksgiving!

I hope you all received my email regarding ACCESS testing. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. I am still in the process of scheduling students, but I will provide you with the information as soon as it is available.

Thank you again for your continued patience and flexibility as I navigate the challenge of coordinating this testing for the first time.

This week's ML Teacher Tip is to use graphic organizers to help students organize their thoughts, connect new information to prior knowledge, and deepen understanding. Tools like Venn diagrams, mind maps, and T-charts provide visual frameworks that make complex ideas more concrete and improve retention

  • For organizing information: Graphic organizers help students see relationships between concepts and structure information logically. For example, a T-chart can help compare and contrast two topics, while a mind map can show how different ideas relate to a central theme.

  • To make personal connections: Visualizing information allows students to more easily connect new material to what they already know, making learning more personal and memorable.

  • To support all learners: Graphic organizers are particularly beneficial for students who are visual learners or who struggle with processing information, but they are effective for all students across various subjects.

Here are some links to fast and free Graphic Organizers from various websites I often visit and use. Don’t forget that you have great examples on Canva as well.

Don’t forget you can find even more resources here: Dodgeland Teacher Resources. You can also feel free to email me or schedule an appointment! 😀

Behavior Specialist

Incase you missed it:

2nd Quarter Incentive

This quarter we will be focusing on “Be Respectful”.  Here is the matrix to review.

Students can earn Poms for showing respectful behavior. Please record Poms your students receive on the “Schoolwide Be Respectful” button in Class DoJo. If you don’t have Poms, you can also just give a student a DoJo point for “Schoolwide Be Respectful”. Additional Poms are located by the mailboxes in the office if you want/need more Poms.

Expectations

Please remember to take some time to build relationships and to review classroom and school expectations upon returning from break.

Recess Information

Outdoor Gear

As we get into colder weather, please encourage students to wear clothing according to our recommendations, however please don’t argue with them (2nd grade and up, younger students can not regulate body temperature as well and need to wear appropriate clothing). We do not go outside when it is dangerously cold, so if they do not wear appropriate clothing, they are choosing to be cold. Recess teachers, please do not allow students back into the building to get additional clothing. They need to dress before they go outside. If a student does not own winter gear, please let me know and we will do our best to find clothing for them, however if they just didn’t bring gear (2nd grade and up) please do not send them to the office for gear.

Indoor Bus Duty

Starting on 12/1/15, we are making a change to indoor bus duty. Students will be reporting to an assigned room by grade and the staff on bus duty will be playing a show (more information on how to access media next week). Students should enter the room, sit down, and watch the show. While some of the spaces are our “Dens”, we will not be playing or running around the rooms, students should just sit and watch the show. Indoor bus duty is from 7:30-7:45. One bus duty person from each level needs to swipe their key fob and welcome students at the door, and the other staff need to cover the classrooms and are responsible for starting the show.

4k - 5k students - room 109.

1st - 2nd grade students - room 102

3rd - 5th grade students - room 137

Outdoor Winter Safety

Our playground equipment and painted areas of the playground are very slippery on frosty mornings. Please remind students to walk on the turf and equipment. Morning bus duty staff and morning recess staff, please close the main structure in the morning if the frost is thick and making the equipment dangerous to climb on. There will be a cone out by the communication sign that you can place on the stairs as a visual reminder that the equipment is closed.

While our standard for indoor bus duty is rain or a temperature 13 degrees or below, 4k/5k staff on bus duty,  if the equipment is frost covered and slippery, please communicate that we will have indoor bus duty, close the gate, and have the students go to room 109 for a show. One staff member should cover 109 and the other staff member should stay outside to monitor students getting off of the bus, welcome students, and send them into room 109.

TechKnow Tip

Tis the season… You may be spending more time online shopping, and with that comes the increased potential for phishing scams! HERE is an article from the United States Postal Inspection Services about “Fake USPS Emails”. This “Delivery Failure Notification” can come from an email or text message. So what can you do to protect yourself?

  1. Did you actually order something online and are awaiting delivery?

  2. Check on your orders or packages directly from the purchase site, verification email, or with a verified tracking number. Tracking numbers can be put into websites such as usps.com, ups.com, fedex.com, or track.amazon.com. Remember, this is not an exhaustive list.

  3. If you do receive a message about a failed delivery that you believe to be valid, contact the post office directly. Try to have your tracking number handy.

  4. If you are sending packages to loved ones, share with them any tracking numbers and estimated time of arrival to help them stay safe too.

Friday Funny

This is Lexi and my favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner. My mom makes homemade stuffing and a beautiful turkey and mashed potatoes and squash, and scalloped corn and it is always delicious.  But, we can not have Thanksgiving dinner without this and she always jokes that it is the "hardest part" of the whole meal!  :-)

Nitty-Gritty

  • Submissions to Tell our Story
    • Please continue to share what is happening in your classrooms with me for Social Media. The more we can share with our community the learning and happenings in our building, the more they understand the depth of the experiences, learning, and opportunities our students have while in our school.  When submitting pictures, please try to include a variety of pictures that include student faces showing their work along with the pictures of them participating in the work.  Just be careful that you are following the photo release alerts in PowerSchool. You may have a post you put on Dojo that can be shared with me to put on the district FaceBook page too.  Just let me know that there is one there and I will work on getting it to Sam.
  • PLTW and ClassLink
    • At the staff meeting this week, Sam showed us how to roster our students into PLTW through Classlink.  The slides are HERE to use to get this ready for your classes before you teach PLTW.  If you have questions, please put in a helpdesk ticket and Sam will help you with this!
  • Purple Purpose Room Donations
    • If you or anyone you know has donations for the Purple Purpose room, please place it in the bin outside the elementary office for the NHS to go through. Mr. Mate and his students are working on organizing the room and donations to make it even easier to find items.
  • PD Schedule for 11/24-11/25
    • There will be a number of things on the agenda for our PD days in November.  There will also be a lot of work time for you built in to the day as well.  I'm grateful for this time.  The agenda will be out mid-week next week. Thank you for your patience with this!
  • Optional Survey for DPI - Please see the message below from Joshua Robinson, the Assistant State Superintendent in WI

Dear colleague,

To better support school districts in meeting American Indian Studies requirements (Wisconsin Act 31), the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), along with tribal partners, is conducting a survey to gather input on current practices and needs related to American Indian Studies instruction. We hope to learn how to best provide information, training, technical assistance, and support. In your role as a teacher, we invite you to participate in the survey.

The survey is expected to take no more than 15 minutes of your time. Your participation is voluntary but would be greatly appreciated. The Survey Research Center (SRC) at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls is conducting the survey on our behalf. Your responses will remain completely anonymous. The SRC will share survey results based on aggregate data only.

To take the survey: Wisconsin Act 31 Teacher Survey

Thank you for participating in this important survey!

Joshua Robinson
DPI Assistant State Superintendent

ML Information

This week’s ML Tip is to use Total Physical Response (TBR), a kinesthetic approach that supports students at all proficiency levels to teach vocabulary and concepts.

The Teacher’s Toolkit informs teachers that “Total Physical Response (TPR) is a method of teaching language or vocabulary concepts by using physical movement to react to verbal input. The process mimics the way that infants learn their first language, and it reduces student inhibitions and lowers stress. The purpose of TPR is to create a brain link between speech and action to boost language and vocabulary learning.”

Learn how you can use TPR in the classroom Total Physical Response.
Check out this 3 minute video of a third grade teacher using TBR in his classroom to help ML students make learning more meaningful using TPR.

Don’t forget you can find even more resources here: Dodgeland Teacher Resources. You can also feel free to email me or schedule an appointment! 😀

For Elementary Teachers Gr. 1-5:
You should have received a link to your ML student's Individual Learning Plans (ILPs). I understand the stress of teaching and everything that goes with that, but please take some time to review the ILPs. Please also note that ACCESS testing will take place from Dec. 1st-Jan. 30th. Letters have been sent home for both ILPs and ACCESS testing this week.

TechKnow Tip

As the Tech Team, we are constantly reviewing our procedures to streamline our support systems and ensure we are assisting both staff and students in the most efficient manner possible.

To help us manage the incoming support requests and prevent requests from being overlooked, we are reminding everyone of our helpdesk system as the recommended process for all technical issues, problems, and implementation requests.

To ensure your request is routed and addressed as quickly as possible, we have launched new categories within the helpdesk system. When submitting a ticket, please select the most appropriate option:

  • Hardware / Device Issue

  • Login Issue

  • PowerSchool / Skyward Issue

  • Software Issue

  • Software Implementation

  • Basic Request (Other)

It is critical that you fill out the form as descriptively as possible. The more information we have upfront, the faster we can potentially resolve the issue or complete the implementation, reducing delays for everyone.

Please encourage students to utilize the helpdesk system for their technical issues, ensuring they provide a full description of the problem they are experiencing.

  • Please remind students to check their email for responses to their submitted tickets, as we often need more information or clarification.

  • We aim to be as non-disruptive as possible to the classroom environment, which includes avoiding pulling students out of class to come to the Tech Center.

  • Teachers are always welcome to submit a ticket on a student's behalf, but please ensure the student is aware that you have done so.

Friday Funny

Last Friday, we went to see the comedian, John Heffron.  He was quite entertaining and it felt really good to laugh. Lexi and Ella were by far the youngest people in the audience, but they shared that they understood the jokes because they live with me.  I don't know how I feel about that, but honestly, I definitely could connect to his theme of getting old is hard work sometimes!  :-)  He performed some new jokes and some that I had heard before, but it was so cool to watch it live.  Here is a clip for you to enjoy!

 Hear Ye, Hear Ye

  • Shout out to Stacey who took the EP survey and reworded the statements to fit for 1st graders so they understand the question better!  She is willing to share if anyone else would like a copy for the future!
  • Welcome Back to Mrs. Huso!  I talked to a couple of her students today who were glad to see her and told me, "Mrs. Huso really missed us at school and is excited to be here!"
  • Shout out to Ms. Duhr who is doing so great with our youngest learners.  I watched her do a lesson with one of her nonverbal students helping him complete a painting activity and teach him to communicate when he wanted "more" or "all done."  Way to go Lexi!
  • Shout out to Miss Brittany who is advocating for students in the classroom and helping to figure out how to get their needs met that are way beyond just the academics of the classroom. Thank you Brittany for seeing this need and being so caring and respectful in how to help them.
  • Mrs. Gunderson has been busy, busy, busy the last few weeks.  I have sat in on a number of SIT meetings, evaluation meetings, re-evals in the last couple of months. She is always prepared, a great listener/collaborator and I also leave feeling positive about the outcome and sure of the next steps.  Thank you so much for your leadership Ashley!

Nitty-Gritty

  • Veterans' Assembly
    • The annual Dodgeland Veteran's Assembly is planned for Tuesday, November 11 starting at 9:30 for students in grades 4K-12th grade. (Our 3K students will not attend, but will get to go next year!)  It is tentatively planned to take approximately an hour.  The recess times have changed slightly, so be sure to check that above. If you have duty, please mindful that you know the time to be outside.  Also, please dress professionally as we have many guests in our building that day.
  • Help Desk Tickets
    • This is a friendly reminder to be sure that you are using the Helpdesk Ticket system to communicate needs you have with technology or with safety/security needs.  This is especially important as we look towards next month when Brad will be on paternity leave.  You can find this in the staff resource page, at the top of your laptop in the IT Support App, or on your iPad.
  • Newly Enrolled Students
    • When new students enroll into the district during the school year, there is a process that needs to be followed in order for them to become active students in PowerSchool.  In order for the Tech Dept to set up an iPad for the student, they must be active students in PowerSchool. This means that when a new student starts in our building, their iPad will be ready for them no earlier than Day 2 of their attendance.  It may take another 24 hours for accounts to sync on the iPads. (i-Ready, ST Math, etc.) Please keep this in mind if you get a new student this school year.
  • AIMSWeb Plus
    • Whew, just in time.  (insert eye roll). Math is now up and running on AimsWeb for all grades.  Please refer to the assessment planning doc HERE for the How-to videos and the specific subtests for each grade.  The assessment for grades 5K-1st is 1:1 interview style.  For grades 2-5, the assessment is through their iPad on TestNav and can be done as a group. You will need approximately 10 min. to complete both assessments in the room. (They are timed tests; one is a 3min test and the other is a 4 min test.)
  • Dodge County Land and Water Conservation Poster Contest
    • If you are interested, they are participating in the 2026 Poster concert. The theme is "Soil. Where it all Begins."  Click HERE to read the letter from the department and click HERE for the details for the poster itself.  Feel free to introduce your students to this if it fits with your lessons.
  • The WORST four letter word I know!
    • Yep, you guessed it, MICE! These unwanted visitors have been around the building in a number of places in the past few weeks. Why wouldn't they want to be in our school, it is warm and dry, has lots of food options, and of course we are so FUN!
      • Seriously, though, please help us to keep this problem from getting worse.
        • Keep food in sealed containers.  Mice can get into drawers and cabinets and can eaily chew through bags. It is best  to not keep food in an easily accessible storage location.
        • Make sure to clean up after yourselves. Don't leave lunch containers out and help our students make sure they are regularly taking snack containers home and food out of lockers.
        • Mice love to find little places to nest so do your best to avoid clutter around your room so they don't burrow in and make themselves at home!
      • If you see anything, please let maintenance (Virgil/James) or Patti/I know so that we can get someone to help with getting them out of the room!

Playground Evacuation Protocol Update
To alleviate some of the congestion when we need to evacuate the playground in a hurry, we have made the following change:
  • Students playing on the turf, playground equipment or grass will enter DOOR (2nd/3rd grade doors).
  • Students playing on the blacktop will enter DOOR (4th/5th grade doors).
  • All students regardless of the door they enter should quietly walk back to their classrooms, sit at their desks, and wait for the next instructions.
We will be practicing this procedure again over the next few weeks unannounced.

Please add any questions, concerns or feedback from our drill HERE. Thanks for everyone’s help and flexibility in learning this new procedure.

Behavior Specialist Information

2nd Quarter Incentive

This quarter we will be focusing on “Be Respectful”.  Here is the matrix to review.

Students can earn Poms for showing respectful behavior. Please record Poms your students receive on the “Schoolwide Be Respectful” button in Class DoJo. If you don’t have Poms, you can also just give a student a DoJo point for “Schoolwide Be Respectful”. Additional Poms are located by the mailboxes in the office if you want/need more Poms.

Zone of Regulation

Here is the presentation that I shared with your classes. Please review all or any of it with your class as necessary.

ML Information

It's already the 2nd quarter of school! This quarter's tips for ML learners and teachers will be about Encouraging Interaction & Deepening Comprehension.

Tip:

Use Sentence Starters. Provide sentence starters and sentence frames to help students participate in discussions and written work.

For example:

" I think _____________ because..."

"In my opinion..."

TechKnow Tip

Recording mini-lessons or instructional videos offers significant research backed benefits for student learning! Check out these key reasons:

  • Self-Paced Learning: Videos allow students to learn at their own speed. They can pause, rewind to review confusing concepts (the "muddiest points"), or re-watch entire lessons, which helps manage cognitive load and is especially useful for students who were absent.

  • Improved Attention: Research shows student engagement drops significantly after just 6-10 minutes. Breaking lessons into shorter video segments aligns better with students' natural attention limits, helping them stay focused and retain more information.

  • Flexible Review: A library of recorded lessons provides students with a way to review material at any time, which is a powerful tool for retrieval practice and exam preparation, unlike live lectures that can't be replayed.

  • Clearer Content: The process of recording encourages teachers to organize their thoughts, prioritize core content, and deliver more coherent explanations, ultimately improving the clarity of the lesson.

So how do you get started? Utilize screen record (and Freeform to write) on your iPad or QuickTime on your laptop.

Friday Funny

This week was full of moments where I asked myself, "Did that really just happen?"  And, I also believe that I need to check the moon phase when conferences come up for staff.  How on earth did I miss that it was a full moon and both Patti and Teresa were out of the building?!  At least then I would prepare for what is coming up! Anyone else feel like this teacher this week?  :-)
